Anfernee Jennings sent a scary warning regarding the Patriots' defense after their dominant performance vs. the Chargers

The New England Patriots cruised past the Los Angeles Chargers in their wild-card matchup, thanks in large part to a suffocating performance from the defense. The Pats allowed a high-powered Chargers offense to score just three points, and as the team begins to prepare for its upcoming matchup against the Houston Texans, linebacker Anfernee Jennings sent a strong message regarding New England’s defense.

Jennings isn’t exactly a household name, but he’s played a big role in helping his team get to this point in the season, as he racked up one of the Patriots’ six sacks in their win over the Chargers. With that sort of performance in the books, Jennings is extremely confident in what this group can accomplish throughout the remainder of the playoffs.

Anfernee Jennings Dishes on Patriots’ Defense

For much of the year, the spotlight in New England has been on the team’s offense. Drake Maye’s sudden evolution into an MVP-caliber player captivated fans across the league, and his play under center is a big reason why the team finds itself where it is currently. However, against the Chargers, Maye put together an uneven performance, and he ended up getting bailed out by his defense.

A former third-round pick, Jennings isn’t an everyday player for the Pats, as he’s primarily used in obvious pass-rushing situations. He managed to make his presence felt against the Chargers, though, as he pinned his ears back and spent most of the night attacking Justin Herbert and his undermanned offensive line whenever he was on the field.

Jennings’ unsung contributions are part of what makes the Patriots’ defense so effective. They may not have much superstar talent, but everyone who takes the field finds a way to make an impact. And after putting together easily its best performance of the season, Jennings believes that this unit may only be scratching the surface of its potential.

“I thought it was good. We finally put most of a game together, playing to the level that we wanted to play, to the standard that we wanted to play to, and play complementary football,” Jennings said. “It don’t matter what happened throughout the game, offense, defense, special teams. We pride ourselves on playing complementary football, and that’s what we try to do.”

Tougher challenges await the Pats, but if their defense can continue to play at this level, and Maye can string together some more consistent performances, they just may end up being the team to beat in the AFC. Each game will become more challenging from here on out, but New England hasn’t appeared fazed by any of the challenges it has faced yet.

Going up against the Texans may change things, though. The Patriots’ offense had its fair share of struggles against the Chargers’ defense, and things will only get more difficult in its upcoming divisional round matchup. New England will look to book its spot in the AFC Championship Game when it squares off against Houston at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
