New England Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf commented on where things stand between the Patriots and Christian Gonzalez. The contract talks between the player and organization have been a hot-button issue throughout the course of the offseason. Wolf addressed them again on Monday morning.
Gonzalez is coming off a season that saw him make the first approval of his career. He totaled 69 tackles and 10 passes defensed over the span of 14 games. Injury issues hampered the beginning of the season for him, as he missed the first three games of the year. However, he was able to return to form rather quickly.
Wolf provided an update on where things stand regarding an extension. This was reported by Sleeper’s Carlos Lopez.
“No Gonzalez update other than I’ll continue to publicly say that we want Christian here. And again, he’s under contract, so we would expect that.”
An extension has been one of the hot topics for the Patriots over the course of this offseason. There were initial reports that extension talks began as early as February at the NFL combine, but have stalled out since then. It was also around this time that the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a four-year, $124 million extension. The deal was agreed upon on March 8. The contract itself set the market.
Gonzalez Has Been Stellar For Patriots
Gonzalez has officially established himself as one of the top corners in the NFL. He entered the NFL as the 17th overall pick in 2023. His career started strong, as he earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month honors for September. However, he suffered a season-ending injury in week four that year against the Dallas Cowboys. The Oregon product would finish the season with just 17 tackles and one interception.
2024 saw him return to dominance. He recorded 59 tackles, two interceptions, and 11 passes defensed on the year. This included a 63-yard fumble return against the Miami Dolphins. He was also part of the Patriots’ upset over the Cincinnati Bengals in the opening week, as he was able to hold wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase to just 14 yards on the afternoon. Those two plays in particular were highlights of his season.
Gonzalez was named an AP Second-Team All-Pro as a result of his efforts. However, he did not make the Pro Bowl. Many were surprised at no Pro Bowl selection.
However, things came full circle in 2025. Now, he has a stellar resume and body of work to be able to show. He has become the linchpin of the Patriots’ secondary. It is certainly important to note that Gonzalez is still under contract for 2026. The Patriots will have at least one more season to have him on the field. This will also give the corner one more season under this current contract to build his resume. Patriots’ fans are eagerly waiting for a deal to get done. The Patriots have done well in developing corner talent throughout the organization’s history. Gonzalez is already in line to play at a high level. In fact, he’s already there.
Now, it’s about keeping him, and making sure he gets to go down as one of the greatest of all time to wear a Patriots uniform.
