The New England Patriots‘ breakout 2025 campaign came to a crushing end in Super Bowl LX, as they suffered a 29-13 defeat at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. From the get-go, the Pats were overmatched in this one, and it resulted in one of the most surprising turnarounds in recent NFL memory getting halted in its tracks.

When watching the game, it was pretty clear that the only thing keeping New England in this game was its defense. Superstar cornerback Christian Gonzalez played a leading role in keeping Seattle’s offense as quiet as possible throughout this one, but he lamented the fact that he missed an opportunity to make a potentially game-changing play late in the first half.

Christian Gonzalez Dishes on Dropped Interception

While the final score may not indicate it, the Patriots’ defense gave the Seahawks offense all it could handle in this one. That was thanks in large part to a stellar effort from the secondary, which was led by Gonzalez, who did a fantastic job keeping the 2025 Offensive Player of the Year, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, under wraps (4 REC, 27 YDS).

Without Gonzalez, this game could have been an even bigger blowout in favor of Seattle. The star cornerback had four tackles, but more importantly, he had three pass deflections, including an incredible acrobatic play that saw him leap up at the last second to break up a deep shot from Sam Darnold to Rashid Shaheed.

One of those pass breakups, though, could have been an interception. With 20 seconds left in the first half, the Seahawks faced 3rd & 3 from the Patriots’ 23-yard line. Seattle had already burned all of its timeouts, so it took a shot at Smith-Njigba in the end zone. Gonzalez had perfect coverage, though, and undercut the route for a big pass breakup. However, Gonzalez could have caught the pass, and he blamed himself for not being able to haul it in after the game.

“I should have came down with that. I should have pulled that in,” Gonzalez admitted when speaking to reporters. “That hurts for me because I feel like that’s three points on me, three points I could have stopped for the team as a whole.”

While Gonzalez is right in saying that he should have come away with this interception, it likely would not have mattered in the grand scheme of things, given how poorly the offense was playing. Still, that goes to show just how high a level he holds himself to, which isn’t much of a surprise, given his billing as one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL.

Even with this loss, there are plenty of reasons for optimism in New England, with Gonzalez being one of them. While he’s going to need a new contract at some point in the near future, there’s no reason to believe he won’t be leading the Pats’ secondary for years to come. Now, the team will look to attack the offseason so that when it returns to action in 2026, it can remain one of the top championship contenders in the league.
