The New England Patriots have seen their offseason become shrouded in drama thanks to their head coach, Mike Vrabel. While more and more details of his involvement with former NFL insider Dianna Russini come to light, Vrabel has remained in charge of the Patriots, and the team is doing its best to proceed as if everything is business as usual.
New England put together a strong body of work during the 2026 NFL Draft, even with Vrabel missing Day 3 of the action to attend counseling. Vrabel was back in the building on Monday, though, and he and the rest of the team’s front office quickly had to make a big decision on star cornerback Christian Gonzalez‘s contract situation.
Patriots Pick Up Christian Gonzalez’s Fifth-Year Option
Prior to Vrabel’s scandal coming to light, one of the biggest topics surrounding the Pats this offseason was Gonzalez’s future with the team. Through three years in the league, Gonzalez has quickly proven himself to be one of the top players at his position, and it’s clear that he is going to be earning a very big contract extension in the near future.
After earning a spot on the All-Pro Second Team in 2024, Gonzalez became a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career in 2025. While his numbers during the regular season were good (69 tackles and 10 pass breakups), he was at his best in the playoffs. In four games, Gonzalez racked up 19 tackles, one interception, one sack, and seven pass breakups.
All eyes have been on a potential extension for Gonzalez, but first, the team had to make a decision on the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. Unsurprisingly, the team exercised that option, which will see him earn around $18.1 million in the 2027 campaign. More importantly, though, this move has given New England more time to negotiate a long-term deal with Gonzalez.
“Patriots exercised CB Christian Gonzalez’s 5th-year contract option today, per source,” Adam Schefter of ESPN reported in a post on X.

Picking up Gonzalez’s fifth-year option was one of the most obvious moves the Patriots could make this offseason. However, it’s really just a precursor for what is still to come, as the ultimate goal remains the same. New England wants to lock up Gonzalez on a long-term contract before training camp arrives in order to avoid having another off-field distraction looming over this team.
The Pats have enough going on with Vrabel that they can’t afford to create any more drama for themselves. Even with Gonzalez’s contract getting taken care of for the time being, there is still work that needs to be done in this department. As a result, it will be worth keeping tabs on this situation to see if the two sides can come to terms on a long-term contract over the next few weeks.
