The New England Patriots got some great news on Saturday, courtesy of The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. Third-year CB Christian Gonzalez, the best player in the Patriots‘ secondary, is expected to make his season debut at home against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, though he is officially listed as questionable on the injury report.
Gonzalez has been dealing with a hamstring injury for a few months now. He missed much of training camp with the injury and has yet to suit up for New England this season. Russini reports that both Gonzalez and New England were aligned in not rushing him back from his injury, giving him time to full heal and rehab so as to lower the chances for re-injury. Gonzalez worked hard to return and should make his debut on Sunday as one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
In Gonzalez’s absence, the Patriots have relied on a combination of CBs Alex Austin and Charles Woods. Free-agent signee Carlton Davis III mans one of the outside spots and Marcus Jones plays in the slot, but Gonzalez is usually their top man on the perimeter. During his absence, the Patriots have struggled on defense, particularly in the secondary.
Christian Gonzalez is Arguably the New England Patriots’ Best Defender

Not only is Gonzalez the best player in the Patriots‘ secondary, he might be the best player on their defense. The former first-round pick out of Oregon back in 2023 only played four games as a rookie before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury, but he looked like a potential Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate in his short time on the field. He had 14 tackles, a sack, an interception, and three passes defensed as a rookie, making his presence felt.
Last season, he played in 16 games, recording 59 tackles, two interceptions, 11 passes defensed, and a fumble recovery. The Patriots built their defensive scheme around Gonzalez — he changes everything they do on defense. His ability to cover one-on-one and shut down his side of the field is a defensive coordinator’s dream, and he plays with excellent zone awareness to make plays from off-coverage.
The New England Patriots Have a Turnover Problem
In her update on the Patriots, Russini also took note of their turnover problem. Against the Steelers last week, New England turned it over inside the Pittsburgh five-yard line twice: once on a fumble and once on an interception. They lost four fumbles this year, most in the NFL through three games, and ball security is becoming a major issue for this young team.
Second-year QB Drake Maye is playing well, but this offense as a whole isn’t talented enough to overcome consistent turnover problems. The Patriots haven’t played an overly difficult schedule, as their opponents to date have a combined three wins, yet they’re 1-2 on the season largely because their offense has faltered when it matters most. To maximize Maye’s growth, they’ll need to clean that up.
