Drake Maye is trying to become the first New England Patriots quarterback aside from Tom Brady to win the Super Bowl.

So Maye detailed the best advice he received from the seven-time Super Bowl champion, which was to take the long way to success.

Maye is slated to be the fourth Patriots quarterback to start the Super Bowl in what will be their record-setting 12th Pro Football Championship appearance. Brady went 6-3 in his previous nine games, but the Pats lost to the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XX and Super Bowl XXXI.

Maye and the Patriots will take on the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in Super Bowl LIX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Tom Brady’s Best Advice To Drake Maye

Maye is in just his second NFL season, and despite the fact he is an NFL MVP finalist, he has still only played two more pro games (32) than in college (30).

So that means the 23-year-old is impressionable, and Brady’s advice was important to him.

“One of the best things he said was ‘there’s no shortcuts to [success]'” Maye said at the Super Bowl Opening Night in San Jose on Monday. “There’s no shortcuts to putting in the work, and the proof’s in the pudding and knowing that the shortcuts that people take are not worth it.”

Brady, of course, is considered both the greatest quarterback and NFL player of all-time. He has the most games played of any quarterback (335) and also is the all-time league leader in passing touchdowns (649), passing yards (89,214) and completions (7,753).

Maye appreciates that all that are a result of Brady’s work.

“Getting the most out of what you put into it,” Maye said. “He’s been great at that and he obviously showed that throughout his career.”

Drake Maye’s Heroes Are His Older Brothers

Many quarterbacks, and Patriots fans of a certain age, look up to Brady. Many young Patriots fans look up to Maye, since he has all the hallmarks of the next great franchise QB in New England.

Yet, Maye’s heroes are his three older brothers, Cole, Beau and Luke.

“Growing up with them, having somebody that’s that close to me kind of live their life and have me learn from them and be the youngest brother and and having something to chase,” Drake said, “They all had a passion, and I had to find a passion for myself that I could follow them, and it happened to be football and now I’m here.”

Maye is the youngest of four and was the fourth major-collegiate athlete in his family. Luke and Beau, like Drake, went to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and played basketball. Luke won a national championship for Roy Williams’ Tar Heels in 2017.

Cole ventured out from the Tar Heel State, where the Mayes are from, and played baseball at the University of Florida. Like Luke, he also won a national championship in 2017, albeit for the Gators, who swept SEC-rival LSU in the championship series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Drake did not win a national title at UNC but can become the first member of the Maye family to win a pro championship Sunday.
