The New England Patriots are Super Bowl bound. The verdict is already in: Patriots vs. the Seattle Seahawks has all the ingredients of a Super Bowl showdown that could go down as one of the most electrifying matchups in NFL history.
One duel, in particular, will command the spotlight: cornerback Christian Gonzalez lining up against wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba — a true clash of elite talent on the game’s biggest stage.
That’s also the take of former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. He told NBC Sports Boston, “They’re very similar sizes. They got very similar skill sets. And I wonder if Christian Gonzalez will follow him around on the field, just to take away that matchup.”
Cornerback vs. wide receiver — a head-to-head clash

Let’s not forget: The Patriots passed on Smith-Njigba to draft Gonzalez 17th overall in 2023. Next Sunday, they’re playing against each other in the Super Bowl.
In tandem with quarterback Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba has emerged as one of the league’s top wide receivers this season. During the 2025 regular season, he recorded 119 receptions for 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the NFC title game, he recorded 153 receiving yards and a touchdown, and he is only 83 yards away from having the second-most productive WR season in NFL history.
And Christian Gonzalez? He has evolved into one of the faces of the franchise — and, more importantly, into a top cornerback. While “Gonzo” didn’t record his first interception of the season until the AFC Championship Game — a pivotal play that helped propel the Patriots safely into the postseason — the numbers still tell the story.
Despite playing in only 14 of 17 regular-season games—missing the start of the season due to a hamstring injury—Gonzalez still recorded 69 total tackles, including 54 solo tackles, and 10 pass deflections. That’s why he has firmly established himself as an indispensable cornerstone of New England’s defense.
Asked on Good Morning America about how the interception in the AFC title game came together, the 23-year-old broke it down: “I kinda just flipped from a DB to a receiver.”

Christian Gonzalez also addressed his upcoming showdown with Smith-Njigba during his appearance on GMA: “It will be fun. We’re both Dallas natives, we’re from the same area. I’ve known him for a while so… I’m just excited. I’m just excited to be on that stage and to have another week with the guys and we’ll go out there and do our thing.”
Smith-Njigba also weighed in with his thoughts on the upcoming Super Bowl. “For me, just chasing my ultimate goal, our ultimate goal, to win a Super Bowl… brings the personal accolades and all this crazy stuff, and it’s an honor and I appreciate all the love and things like that,” he said of the attention he’s received.
“I’m ready to bring back the Lombardi back to Seattle,” he added. “It’s a dream come true.”
The Patriots return to the big game, with quarterback Drake Maye, for the first time since 2019. The Seahawks’ last appearance was 2015, where they faced off against the Patriots.
The Super Bowl will take place on February 8 in Santa Clara. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. ET.
