The New England Patriots‘ offense is by no means a completed product, with holes still apparent on the offensive line, at tight end and at receiver. But it is definitely a substantial improvement from what we all saw from the franchise back in 2024, in which they were one game away from getting the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

The receiving corps got a boost this offseason with the additions of Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins and third round rookie, Kyle Williams, all of whom are expected to make the final 53-man roster.

Combine that with the spots that will likely be taken up by Kayshon Boutte and Demario “Pop” Douglas, who were the team’s top two wideouts in 2024, and the Pats could have former second round pick, Ja’Lynn Polk, fourth round pick, Javon Baker, and veteran, Kendrick Bourne, all fighting for one roster spot come the end of August.

And that does not even take into account the semi-legendary rookie Efton Chism III, who had an excellent showing at minicamp last month – and could be a dark horse to make the roster, even as a fresh-out-of-college undrafted free agent.

So in this trade proposal, the team cuts their losses on their most originally-valuable asset of the four – Ja’Lynn Polk – and sends him away to the NFC West’s Arizona Cardinals.

Ja’Lynn Polk Could Be Expendable For The Patriots

Polk had one of the least impressive rookie seasons for a non-injured top-40 wideout. Having been selected with the 36th overall pick, on a roster that was almost totally void of receiving talent, much was put onto the shoulders of the Washington grad ahead of the 2024 season.

Unfortunately, he could not deliver, managing just 12 receptions for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns last year. And Pro Football Focus’ advance stats don’t help his case much either, as they considered him to be a potential trade candidate in training camp in a piece written on Thursday

“Polk doesn’t quite align with the star power of the first few names on this list,” Bradley Locker wrote, “but this upcoming training camp will be pivotal for the second-year receiver.

A second-round pick by New England in 2024, Polk endured a miserable inaugural season, recording a 45.4 PFF receiving grade. His foremost concern was drops, with his 14.3% drop rate the sixth highest among receivers with 30 or more targets.”

And this season he has already got off to a difficult start, having already missed multiple training camp practices.

Does Polk Need A Change Of Scenery?

Polk may be the guy, but at this point signs are not looking to be moving in that direction.

The Cardinals need a receiver to pair with second year pro, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Polk has enough upside that he could become a true WR2 on a decent team.

Combine that with the fact that Arizona has very little behind Harrison, third year pro Michael Wilson, and veteran Zay Jones – who managed just 84 yards in 2024 (3 less than Polk) and the 2024 second round pick actually has a decent chance of making the roster in 2025.

If New England gets any hints that he is looking like filling out his true potential, head coach Mike Vrabel will ensure he sticks around. But if not, it is totally possible that Vrabel could decide to go in a different direction.
