The New England Patriots made a small yet crucial roster move on Friday, keeping together the quarterback room.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots reached an agreement with Tommy DeVito on a two-year, $7.4 million deal that includes $2 million guaranteed.

This comes as DeVito was set to be a restricted free agent.

DeVito began his career with the New York Giants, signing in 2023 as an undrafted free agent. He went on to start a few games in his rookie season after second-string quarterback Tyrod Taylor was sidelined with an injury, quickly becoming an fan-favorite. He spent 2024 as the third-string quarterback for New York behind Daniel Jones and Drew Lock, but eventually become the starter once again due to Jones’ poor performance.

He returned to the Giants once again at the start of the 2025 season, but was waived as part of final roster cuts and was ultimately claimed off waivers by the Patriots. Throughout the season, he served as the Patriots’ third-string quarterback behind Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs.

He didn’t appear in any games with New England, having appeared in a career 12 games making eight starts and going 3-5, for 1,358 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

Here’s What Reporters Are Saying About This Move

ESPN’s Mike Reiss: “Increasing tenders for restricted FAs ($3.52 million for right of 1st refusal) leads to multi-year deals like this. In this case, DeVito gives up a chance at unrestricted free agency in 2027. But possibly strengthens his long-range staying power by doing so.”

MassLive’s Mark Daniels: “The Patriots have solid depth at QB”

CLNS’ Taylor Kyles: “Tommy DeVito was set to be a restricted free agent Would still expect the #Patriots to add a rookie QB to develop”

Tommy DeVito Reflects On His Time With The Patriots

In an interview with Patriots On SI at the end of January, the quarterback opened up about what it’s been like to spent the season in Foxborough.

Being with this team from Week 1 to now has been amazing,” DeVito told the outlet. “I wasn’t able to do OTAs and training camp here, so I didn’t get to see everything that went into that … I was kind of just tossed into Week 1, but to see how the team believes in the identity that coach Vrabes has brought about, and believes in themselves … we go into games expecting to win.

“To feel what winning is like, to appreciate it and to enjoy it has truly been special.”

And with that, he gets to spend another season with Maye and Dobbs, both of whom he enjoyed working with.

“To be able to see Drake’s growth from week one to now has been awesome,” DeVito said, later adding that “Dobbs has been great too.”

“Obviously, (Dobbs) been on a ton of different teams and been tossed into ton of different situations. We’re [Josh and I] able to relate in that aspect and give Drake tidbits whenever we can without overloading … it’s about us being able to read the room, right, and contributing where we can. But. this is a special group and a special team that I’m thankful to be a part of.”
