TreVeyon Henderson is a rookie running back for the New England Patriots who rushed for 911 yards on 180 carries with nine touchdowns after being plucked in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft out of Ohio State. Henderson was taken 38th overall, two picks behind Buckeyes teammate Quinshon Judkins (picked by Cleveland), who teamed with Henderson in the backfield to lead OSU to a national championship.

Now, Henderson shares carries with Rhamondre Stevenson in New England. He is known for his speed and big-play ability, having run a 4.43-second 40-yard dash during last year’s NFL combine. He was fifth in the NFL with a 5.1 yards per carry average, and finished third in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

Henderson hails from a football-centric family in Hopewell, Virginia, but had a difficult road to the NFL and Super Bowl 60.

Here’s what you need to know about TreVeyon Henderson’s family:

1. TreVeyon Henderson Revealed He Got Married 3 Days Before the Super Bowl

While Henderson has not talked publicly about the identity of his wife, he did reveal in an talk with “The Walk” podcast this week that he and his partner decided to get married recently. Henderson spoke about how his faith guided his decision to make that leap, even at the young age of 23.

“I just broke the news,” Henderson said. “I got married, we made it official. We got engaged first, and then we eloped. And made it official, man. One thing that I was really holding onto was sexual morality early in my faith, and I remember just waking up one day and reaching a point on my walk with the Lord where it was like, choose whom today you will serve. … In that moment, I knew I had to have a conversation with my girlfriend. I wanted to continue to pursue Christ and follow him. And I was like, we either have to split up or you can come along with me. It was a long conversation.

“… Growing as a husband, man, and learning the beauty of marriage, the Lord is, He’s still working on my heart.  It’s been great, though, being married so far, has been great.”

2. Football Was an Important Part of His Hopewell, Virginia, Upbringing

Henderson was primarily raised by his mother, Lakeesha Hayes-Winfield, after her and Trenton Henderson split up, in the town of Hopewell, a small town south of Richmond with a population of 23,000. Despite its size, though, Henderson describes his hometown as one of temptation and potential violence.

“There’s a lot of violence, shootings almost every day, people get killed almost every day,” Henderson explained, via the Columbus Dispatch. “Just all sorts of violence around there. Most kids don’t make it out of my city. Most people don’t make it past 18.”

But Hayes-Winfield did her best to combat that situation by turning the family’s backyard into a football training ground.

Said Henderson’s brother, Ronnie Walker, ““Our backyard was our safe haven from all the problems that were going on in the city. We would go in the backyard every day, doing drills and things like that. I’d be recording and critiquing.”

3. Henderson’s 2 Brothers Were Both Football Stars in High School, and His Older Brother Played for Indiana and Virginia

Henderson has two brothers, older brother Ronnie Walker and younger brother Kesean Henderson, all of whom starred at Hopewell High School and wore No. 32 to honor their maternal grandfather, Albert Lee Harris, who also starred at Hopewell as a basketball and football player nicknamed “Airplane” because of his speed.

Ronnie Walker went on to play for Indiana, appearing in 22 games as a running back in 2018 and 2019. He transferred to Virginia and played there for three seasons, wrapping his collegiate career with 359 yards on 97 carries.

Younger brother Kesean Henderson was a 2024 recruit as well as a track star but there is no record of him playing collegiately now.

But most important, all three were excellent students, Hopewell coach Ricky Irby recalled: “”All three of her kids had 4.0 GPAs. They never made a B and Kesean is following right along. They were very focused, laser-focused on what their goals were and never once deviated off that track.”

4. TreVeyon Henderson’s Mother, Lakeesha Hayes-Winfield, Worked 2 Jobs to Support Sons

Better known as Keesha, Hayes-Winfield worked hard to provide for her sons, taking on two jobs to put the boys through school even when times were tight. When her oldest son was in middle school, she began to make a bet with him–if he got all A’s on his report card, she would give him $100.

He did it, and she came up with the money. When TreVeyon got to high school and began getting A’s, too, Hayes-Winfield said, “I’m like, ‘Dang. I’ve gotta come up with $200.’ It was so funny, but they kept it up. Tre would be like, ‘mom, my report card’s coming up, and I got straight A’s. You better have that money ready.”

Walker recalled her dedication to him, TreVeyon and Kesean: “It made me feel great. It’s very heartwarming. I love my mom, she’s always been there for us since we were little kids. We used to stay in one room. She always wanted the best for us.”

5. Trenton Henderson, TreVeyon Henderson’s Father, Had Life-Saving Heart Surgery

Back in 2013, Trenton Henderson was close to death. He had been diagnosed years earlier with congenital heart disease, and at age 47, he was found to be in, “end-stage heart failure.” He projected to have just three-to-six months to live.

Henderson was a candidate for a heart transplant, but also had a more time-sensitive device–a left ventricular assists device–implanted to keep his heart functioning normally, at VCU hospital in Virginia. Twelve years later, the device is still working, and Trenton Henderson has chosen to remove himself from the transplant list.

In April, Henderson was with TreVeyon Henderson when he was selected by the Patriots, and now, he will get to watch him in the Super Bowl.

“It just didn’t seem real. To see this little kid’s dream come true, and to have that moment with him and to be alive and share it with him, it was amazing.” Trent told VCUHealth.org. “We are so proud of him.”
