The New Orleans Saints hope they have found a hidden gem at wide receiver in Mason Tipton, who is standing out at training camp for the second straight year. Despite entering the league undrafted and facing long odds, Tipton continues to turn heads with his explosive speed, strong hands, and sharp route running, making a real case for a spot on the final roster.
Tipton Impressing for a Second Consecutive Camp
After flashing last summer, Tipton has built on that momentum with another strong start to camp in 2025. ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reported that Tipton “had several nice catches” at camp, with head coach Kellen Moore calling him “really, really reliable.” On Day 3 of training camp, he racked up five catches, including three over 20 yards, in team and seven-on-seven periods, including a deep sideline reception from rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler.
Saints Wire reporter John Sigler wrote, “just like last summer, (Tipton’s) speed and smooth movement skills” were on display.
New Orleans’ official camp report also praised Tipton’s start, highlighting his “deep ball and intermediate catching ability.” Tipton has lived up to the hype so far.
Overcoming the Odds
Tipton, a former Yale standout, entered the NFL with little fanfare. But he hasn’t let that slow him down. It takes a great deal of persistence to transition from the Ivy League to the Superdome.
That work ethic is paying off. Tipton has drawn praise not just for his speed, but for his polish as a receiver, something that tends to set undrafted players apart in crowded position battles.
“I can run every route in the book, so I add that aspect of explosiveness, downfield speed but also I can run every route,” Tipton told the Akron Beacon before last season.
His rookie debut was delayed by an injured hamstring, but Tipton finally reached the field on Oct. 17 against the Denver Broncos. He collected six catches for 45 yards, finishing the season with eight receptions.
Saints Need Help at WR
His potential breakout comes at a time when the Saints’ wide receiver room is under scrutiny. A recent Pro Football Focus ranking placed New Orleans among the bottom 10 receiving corps in the NFL. Outside of Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, there’s little proven depth. Both veterans come with health concerns. Olave has a history of concussions, and Shaheed was limited to six games in 2024.
Veteran Brandin Cooks may be past his prime. He’s appeared in only 37 of a possible 51 games over the last three seasons. His 10 games last season matched his career low. Behind him, there isn’t much. That opens the door for someone like Tipton to make the jump from camp standout to game-day contributor.
What’s Next for Tipton?
As camp progresses, Tipton will need to carry this momentum into joint practices and preseason games. But if he continues making plays at this rate, the coaching staff will have to expand his role.
Kellen Moore has a history of leading high-octane offenses led by dynamic receivers like Ceedee Lamb and DeVonta Smith. He should be able to get the most out of what he has on the roster.
For now, Mason Tipton is doing exactly what he needs to do, making noise when it matters most.
