“Yeah, I mean, we’re working through all personnel decisions, and we’ll do that over the next few days,” New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said in his press conference on Monday. He was asked if New York is considering a quarterback change after their loss to the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.

“Well look, we’re going through the tape right now, and we’re evaluating everything,” Daboll reiterated when asked to clarify.

When asked if this meant QB Russell Wilson was no longer the starter, Daboll responded with, “I’d say we’re evaluating everything.”

It seems clear a quarterback change could be imminent. Wilson was signed to be the starting quarterback for the Giants after spending last season in Pittsburgh. But New York traded back into the first round of the NFL draft to select QB Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss at No. 25 overall back in April. He’s the future in New York, at some point. The question is just when.

“I’m not saying who’s starting or who’s not starting, Dan, I’m just saying we’re evaluating everything right now,” Daboll said to one reporter who pressed him on the matter. “We’re going through the tape from yesterday, and we’re evaluating every position right now.”

“Yeah, we just watched the tape here,” Daboll said. “We’re in the meetings with the players right now. You know, like I said yesterday, in order to improve the passing game — and I’d say that was the number one thing we need to improve from yesterday, as a collective — everybody’s gotta be doing exactly the right stuff. So it’s not all on one guy. There’s multiple reasons why certain plays didn’t come out the way we wanted them to come out, and we’ll continue to do that.”

“We’re doing what we normally do. Which is watching the tape. We’re just watching it with the players right now. So we’ll have staff meetings after this, but when we came in we watched the tape — offense, defense, kicking game — as a staff, and then we go meet with the players. That’s where we’re at right now.”

“I’m going through the pass game right now, or talking about it with you, and there’s a number of things: from protection, to routes, to throws, to reads. We have to do a better job collectively to improve the pass game. You know, we had one good game throwing the football, and then yesterday we took a step back and need to improve in that area.

Russell Wilson isn’t Giving the New York Giants Much Choice but to Start Jaxson Dart

Through two weeks, Wilson led the NFL in passing yards. He was sensational in an overtime loss to the Cowboys in Week 2, throwing for 450 yards and three touchdowns, but he struggled mightily against the Chiefs in Week 3, with only 160 passing yards and two interceptions.

The supporting cast isn’t great, especially along the offensive line. All-Pro LT Andrew Thomas made his return in this game, though he only played the first half before being replaced by rookie OL Marcus Mbow, who mostly played right guard and right tackle in college at Purdue. Mbow projects as an NFL guard, but he was tasked with protecting Wilson’s blindside in the second half.

Still, Wilson will soon leave Daboll and the Giants no choice but to bench him for the rookie. There was one goal line sequence in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs where Wilson fired the ball out of the end zone on third- and fourth-down plays, ending New York’s chances. New York is 0-3, and Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen need to win now to keep their jobs.

The Giants have used Dart as a read-option quarterback a few times so far, getting him a few snaps, though he has yet to throw a pass in the NFL regular season. On Sunday night, the home crowd cheered whenever he checked into the game, and Wilson was booed by the end of it. It was inevitable Dart would play at some point this year, but that time might be sooner rather than later.
