The New York Giants have officially wrapped up their 2025-26 season, and with a 4-13 record and last spot in the NFC East, it’s one they’d like to forget. But, the team closed out their season on a high note, with a riveting 34-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys, so they have something to smile about heading into the offseason.
One of the storylines coming out of the New York Giants‘ season was signing veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, who was quickly replaced by rookie Jaxson Dart. On Monday, January 5, Wilson spoke to reporters and dropped the news that he suffered a torn hamstring before the team’s Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys, saying it was an injury he “couldn’t tell anybody” about.
The news came up when Wilson was asked by reporters about his future in the NFL, to which he responded that it partly depending on his health. Then, he talked about an injury that didn’t appear on official New York Giants’ injury reports.
“You know, I played that (Week 2) game, you know, I tore my hamstring on Friday in practice — the last play of practice. And I had a grade two (tear),” he said. “I couldn’t tell anybody. I had to go and play on it just because I knew the circumstance, I had to play on it, no matter what.”
Russell Wilson Comments Could Spark NFL Investigation Into the New York Giants
Wilson added of his time being injured, “I actually ended up going to the Dallas Mavericks‘ facility, training. And, you know, kept it quiet, just trying to get treatment on it and just knowing that I probably couldn’t run from the goal line to the 10-yard line if I wanted to, but I feel like, you know, I got to play this game.”
Following Wilson’s comments, people were quick to point out that this could get the New York Giants in trouble. It’s against the NFL’s rules for teams to hide injuries from official reports, so if the NFL decides to investigate the incident, the Giants may get in hot water. That’s the last thing a franchise trying to rebuild itself needs.
Wilson quickly reacted to the idea that his news could get the New York Giants in trouble. The quarterback took to social media to say that the Giants didn’t know about his injury, but the NFL may choose to still investigate.
“Not the [Giants] fault,” Wilson said on Twitter. “They didn’t know bc I didn’t want to tell anyone bc of the circumstances.” He added that he “just had to play through it to try and go ball that day” and that he “thought we were going to win that wild crazy game.”
Interim Head Coach Mike Kafka Comments on New York Giants Win
After the Giants’ win over the Cowboys on Sunday, interim head coach Mike Kafka praised his team.
“I’m just really proud of the players and the coaches for hanging tough, putting in the work every single day, every single week,” Kafka told reporters. “They never wavered. They never wavered. I know the results weren’t there, but the process was right.”
He added in his postgame comments, “The way they went about it, the competitive stamina, they went about it to turn this thing around the last couple weeks and make a statement in terms of how they played and how they prepared, how they practiced.”
