For New York Giants fans of a certain age, the name Charlie Weis will good feelings.
So the fact the Giants are reportedly pivoting to Charlie Weis Jr. for their vacant offensive-coordinator role could be a good omen for starving Giants fans.
SNY’s Connor Hughes suggested Weis as “a name that keeps coming up” after the Giants missed out on Todd Monken, who was named as Cleveland Browns head coach Wednesday.
Weis, of course, is coming off a breakout year as offensive coordinator of Mississippi, under former NFL coach and current LSU head coach Lane Kiffin. Weis was the Ole Miss OC during its three-game run in the College Football Playoff, helping the Rebels knock off Tulane then upset Georgia before falling to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.
Monken, who had been the offensive coordinator under coach John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens for each of the past three seasons, was considered the favorite to follow Harbaugh to Greater New York, and replace Mike Kafka as OC.
But understandably, he could not pass up his first opportunity to become an NFL coach, even with the lowly Browns.
Charlie Weis Jr. Is In The Mix For The Giants OC Role
Weis is currently the LSU offensive coordinator under Kiffin, who of course left Ole Miss to go to Baton Rouge before the playoff. But Weis may end up never calling an offensive play for the Bayou Bengal if NFL sources are correct.
Hughes referenced the previous relationship between Weis and Jaxson Dart, the Giants’ budding second-year franchise quarterback. Weis was the quarterbacks coach and OC at Ole Miss for each of Dart’s three seasons in Oxford, Mississippi and helped Dart get chosen by the Giants with the 25th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft last year.
“Weis arrived at Ole Miss the same year as Jaxson Dart (2022) and served as his QB coach, offensive coordinator (although Lane [Kiffin] called plays) all three years,” Hughes posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The two remain close. Wouldn’t go as far yet to say he’s the favorite, but he’s the name that keeps coming up in league circles.”
Weis came out from under Kiffin’s shadow in the CFP run by calling offensive plays, and led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss the Rebels averaged 35.6 points per game in those three games. They also scored as many points (27) against national runner-up Miami as any other team this season.
Charlie Weis Sr. Was A Giants Assistant Coach
If you’re rooting against Charlie Jr. because of his age (32) and relative inexperience, he comes from Giants bloodlines.
Charlie Sr., a Trenton, New Jersey native, was Bill Belichick’s offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots for three Super Bowl wins before he was the head coach at Notre Dame and Kansas.
But before all that, he was a Giants offensive assistant and running backs coach for three seasons. He was on the Giants staff in 1990 under Bill Parcells where they defeated the Buffalo Bills 20-19 in Super Bowl XXV, one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.
Weis went on to coach under Parcells as the New York Jets offensive coordinator for three years, including 1998, where the Jets went to the AFC Championship Game and fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos.
