Just one day after the culmination of the 2025 NFL regular season, the New York Giants made a surprising announcement via their social media accounts.

Joe Schoen, the general manager of New York, will remain in his role for at least the upcoming season, according to Giants‘ President and CEO John Mara and Chairperson Steve Tisch.

Here’s the official statement:

“The 2025 season has been deeply disappointing, and the results on the field have not lived up to the standards this organization and our fans expect.

As previously stated, Joe Schoen will remain our General Manager and continue to lead our football operations and the search for our next head coach. Continuity and stability in the front office is important to our progress.

We believe in our young core of talent, which we can build around for future success.”

Schoen was hired as GM following the 2021 season, along with Brian Daboll at head coach. Daboll was fired earlier this season, while it seems that Giants’ ownership still believes in Schoen’s vision for the team moving forward.

Tough Sledding For Schoen in New York

In his four seasons as general manager of the Giants, the team has gone just 22-45-1, while only making the playoffs once back in 2022, Schoen’s first season with the organization. Outside of that playoff season, the Giants are 13-38 under Schoen.

With that being said, Schoen has had pretty solid draft classes during his tenure. Most of the Giants’ core of valuable young players has been drafted by Schoen since 2022: Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, Abdul Carter, Darius Alexander, Malik Nabers, Dru Phillips, Theo Johnson, Tyrone Tracy, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Wan’Dale Robinson.

Those pieces should be good enough to be better than a 4-13 record.

So, clearly Mara and Tisch believe in Schoen’s vision of what a winning football team looks like, and are trusting him to select their next head coach that can take the talent they have and turn it into a winning product.

Though we’re just one day past the end of the regular season, the list of candidates for Schoen to interview looks pretty solid; a few guys rumored to be in the mix for the job are Kevin Stefanski, Vance Joseph, Mike McCarthy, Antonio Pierce, and current interim coach Mike Kafka.

Giants Fans Upset With Decision to Stick With Schoen

If you take a look at the replies to the Giants post on X with the statement from Mara and Tisch, it won’t take long to get a feel for how New York fans are reacting to the news. A barrage of photoshopped pictures of Schoen with clown makeup and pictures of Giants fans with brown bags over their heads make up pretty much the entire comment section.

You can’t really blame Giants fans for feeling this way, even if Schoen has potential moving forward. For an organization with such a prideful fanbase and a rich history, the last 13 years have just been dismal for the team.

Schoen is certainly entering an offseason with much to prove to the fanbase, the team, and the entire league.
