The New York Giants had a bit of a rocky 2025 campaign, but there are several reasons for optimism heading into the offseason. Earlier this week, it looked like the Giants had capitalized on that positive momentum, as reports emerged indicating that they were closing in on a deal to hire recently fired Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh to be their new leader.
Harbaugh’s hire would be a huge win for the Giants, as he has a wealth of experience that would surely help take the team to the next level. However, the deal hasn’t crossed the finish line just yet, as one NFL insider explained why Harbaugh is taking his time when it comes to dotting his i’s and crossing his t’s on his deal with New York.
NFL Insider Provides Update on John Harbaugh, Giants Deal
After firing Brian Daboll midway through the 2025 campaign, New York entered the offseason knowing it would be looking for a new head coach. Things changed for the team, though, when Harbaugh was surprisingly fired by the Ravens, as he quickly became their top target in their head coach search.
Harbaugh met with New York earlier in the week, and reports began to filter out indicating that the two sides had agreed to a deal. Those reports appear to have been premature, though, as Harbaugh hasn’t signed anything just yet, and it appears as if he is taking his time to make a final call on this major decision.
This will surely cause some panic among Giants fans, as the fear is that Harbaugh could be getting cold feet. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, while it is true that Harbaugh hasn’t signed any deal just yet, he is continuing to work towards finalizing something with New York, and if all goes according to plan, he could put pen to paper on his new contract on Friday.
“Talks continue between the Giants and John Harbaugh, and a deal could get done in the coming hours,” Pelissero wrote in a post on X. “But Harbaugh has been very methodical about doing due diligence, and nothing is finalized yet.”

It’s certainly fair for Giants fans to be a bit concerned by the fact that Harbaugh doesn’t actually have a deal in place with the team just yet. Considering how he postponed his meetings with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons, it seems like only a matter of time until something gets finalized, but until then, there’s going to be a feeling of uneasiness in New York.
The overarching belief is that Harbaugh is going to be hired by the Giants, but until he puts pen to paper on a deal, anything could happen. Friday figures to be a very important day of negotiations for the two sides, and you can bet all eyes will be on Harbaugh and New York to see if they can hammer out a deal that makes him the team’s next head coach.
