In the third round of the NFL Draft, the New York Giants parted with multiple picks to trade up and nab wide receiver Malachi Fields. Though still in the early days of his tenure with the team, he is turning heads and landing promising expectations to start his pro career.
While speaking with the media during rookie minicamp, Giants Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown gave his thoughts on Fields. After doing a deep dive on the prospect leading up to the draft, they believe he is someone who can quickly get on the field and start making an impact within the offense.
“It gives you comfort of knowing what you’re gonna get year one,” Brown said. “That’s going to be low start-up costs in terms of getting the player on the field and contributing for us.”
Now with the Giants, Fields has the chance to play alongside an emerging young wide receiver in Malik Nabers and a promising second-year quarterback in Jaxson Dart. In light of Darius Slayton’s offseason surgery, the opportunity is there for Fields to carve out a role for himself in New York’s offense as a rookie.
Giants Coach John Harbaugh Likes What he Sees From WR Malachi Fields
Brown isn’t the only high-ranking member of the Giants who has been impressed by what Fields brings to the table. The Notre Dame standout appears to have put together a strong showing in minicamp, catching the eye of his new head coach in the process.
During a recent media availability, John Harbaugh gave his initial thoughts on a handful of the Giants’ new faces. He had nothing but praise for Fields, applauding numerous areas of his skill set.
“Malachi, a bunch of plays,” said Harbaugh. “Did you see him on the slants today? He made every catch yesterday. Made one high catch over the top of the corner one time. Happy with all those guys.”
Harbaugh’s early praise of Fields is certainly noteworthy as he continues preparing for his first year as coach of the Giants.
Giants WR Malachi Fields Opens up on His Strongest Skills
Weeks removed from the NFL Draft, the Giants have slowly been releasing behind-the-scenes film from the festivities. Fields is highlighted in the latest release, as the team aired his interview with Harbaugh from the combine.
Fields quickly won over the Giants coach in the conversation by citing his strong passion for the game of football. The young wideout also gave his thoughts on his skill set and what he feels makes him an impactful talent at his position.
“I would just say big catches,” Fields said. “Tracking the ball down the field and making a play on the ball. Those contested catches, or the big block that springs running backs.”
Having another dynamic weapon on the field would do wonders for Dart as he gears up for his first full season as the Giants’ starter. Fields will look to fill that void, and based on all the talk around him, the team feels he can fill those shoes as well.
Looking ahead for Fields, he’ll look to keep the positive momentum rolling through OTA, which are set to begin later this month.
