Giants fans have made it clear they want general manager Joe Schoen to get fired

The New York Giants are entering a franchise-defining offseason, and general manager Joe Schoen is making it clear that this head coaching search will be driven by more than just scheme or résumé.

Speaking publicly about the process, Schoen laid out a clear set of priorities for the organization’s next head coach — priorities that revolve around leadership, accountability, communication, and most importantly, a defined plan for the future of quarterback Jaxson Dart.

What Schoen Is Looking For in the Next Head Coach

Schoen opened by telling the media, “In terms of criteria for the next head coach, there’s several criteria we’re going to be looking for. Leadership being an important element in the head coaching world, football acumen will be important, player development is very important — having a plan for player development.

Schoen emphasized that the Giants are not seeking a specific archetype. Offensive coach or defensive coach, first-time head coach or veteran — none of that, he said, is a prerequisite. Instead, the focus is on finding a leader capable of commanding the room, developing players, and setting a consistent standard in a market that punishes instability.

The message was pointed. After multiple seasons of inconsistency, the Giants seek a head coach who can establish accountability throughout the roster and coaching staff, communicate effectively with players, and foster trust internally. Schoen repeatedly highlighted leadership traits, signaling that the next hire must be able to unify the locker room and handle the pressure that comes with leading a New York franchise.

That philosophy explains why the Giants have cast such a wide net early in the process. Rather than locking into a single vision — such as chasing the next offensive innovator — Schoen and ownership appear committed to evaluating a broad range of candidates who meet their core standards.

Jaxson Dart’s Development Is Central to the Decision

At the center of the entire search is Jaxson Dart. Schoen made it clear that the Giants view Dart as a foundational piece and that any head coaching candidate must present a coherent, detailed plan for his development.

Schoen continued, “We have a young quarterback. It’s going to be important that we have a plan in terms of Jaxson [Dart]’s development. Holding people accountable, communication… those are some of the characteristics that we’re going to be looking for in the next head coach.”

Dart showed flashes during his first season, but like many young quarterbacks, he also experienced growing pains. The Giants’ leadership understands that his trajectory will be directly influenced by the stability, structure, and support provided by the next coaching staff.

That requirement adds a critical layer to the evaluation process. Even defensive-minded candidates must demonstrate how they would build an offensive staff capable of nurturing Dart, tailoring a system to his strengths, and allowing him to grow without being overwhelmed.

For the Giants, this is a lesson learned from recent seasons. Talent alone is not enough — development, alignment, and long-term vision matter just as much. Otherwise, things could just as easily fall apart as they did under Brian Daboll, Shane Bowen, and company.

Schoen’s comments painted a picture of an organization trying to reset its approach after years of uneven progress. The Giants are not simply looking for a coach who can win immediately; they are looking for someone who can establish a clear identity, maximize young talent, and guide the franchise forward with purpose.

As interviews begin and names continue to surface, one thing is evident: this search is being shaped by fundamentals. Leadership, development, and a real plan for the quarterback position will determine who ultimately earns the job — and who helps define the Giants’ next era.
