The New York Jets have reunited with a familiar face.

Head coach Aaron Glenn announced that they have brought Adrian Martinez back. He was cut by the San Francisco 49ers this week.

Martinez was with the Jets from July of 2024 through August of 2025. He didn’t make the final 53-man roster this offseason and opted to join the 49ers on their practice squad.

Martinez, 25, was named the UFL regular season MVP and UFL championship MVP for his performance with the Birmingham Stallions.

“Martinez led the league in rushing with 528 yards through the regular season. He was No. 3 in passing with 1,749 yards and tied for second in passing touchdowns with 15. He was also No. 2 in the UFL in total offense with 2,277 yards. Martinez was responsible for 18 touchdowns (15 passing, 3 rushing), which tied for most in the UFL,” the league announced in a press release after he won the award.

Martinez Adds Some Much Needed QB Insurance Amid Injury Issues

Justin Fields (knee soreness) and Tyrod Taylor (groin) won’t practice on Wednesday, December 10.

“There are a number of injuries that I have on this list. I’m going to read through them and try to make sure that what I articulate to you guys is very clear and to the point. I want to start with the quarterbacks first, so Tyrod and Justin, they won’t be practicing today. We will see exactly how they progress during the week,” coach Glenn said.

“So today Brady [Cook] will be getting all of the first team reps. You guys might have already found out that we signed Adrian Martinez who was with us during [training] camp. So there is a plan for the quarterbacks for either way that it works out during the week that we got all of our bases covered,” Coach Glenn explained.

Cook Stands to Benefit From Some Extra Time as QB1

Coach Glenn refused to officially crown Cook as the QB1 for the Week 15 Jacksonville Jaguars game. However, he did say that Cook will benefit from the extra reps in practice.

“Man, that does a lot for any quarterback. Especially with building continuity with the rest of the guys, set points for where he is going to be at with the offensive line, receiver, and quarterback communication — anytime you get reps like that with the first team with a different quarterback always helps. Again, it’ll be good for him, but we will see how this week progresses as it comes to our quarterback situation,” Coach Glenn said.

Crazy Turn of Events

The two quarterbacks who were battling for the Jets QB3 role over the summer in training camp are now back together once again.

If Fields and Taylor are unable to suit up this week, Cook and Martinez would assume the first and second quarterback positions on the depth chart against the Jaguars.

It’s a wild turn of events in another crazy season for the Jets that is never not interesting. The Jets at 3-10 were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins.
