The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New York Jets 29-27 in Week 3.
Following the victory, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield was asked how it felt to get the victory for head coach Todd Bowles against his former team.
“I loved it. It’s also their D-Coordinator [Steve Wilks] was the one who cut me in Carolina. So it was a lot of stuff that was personal today. Haason Reddick, [a] former Jet, a lot of people,” Mayfield responded on Sunday, September 21.
Mayfield’s Chip on His Shoulder Appears to Be Manufactured
During the 2022 offseason, the Cleveland Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick.
He appeared in seven games and made six starts for the Panthers in 2022.
“Mayfield, 27, requested his release [in December of 2022], and the Panthers agreed to it, league sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed to Joseph Person of The Athletic.
So Mayfield used his made-up anger for Wilks, who at the time was serving as the interim head coach for Carolina after Matt Rhule was fired because he supposedly “cut him,” but only because Mayfield requested to be released, which the team granted.
Just wanted to make sure I had that right. Mayfield tried to paint this as some sort of personal vendetta when it was anything but.
Jets Face Harsh Reality Down 0-3
The Aaron Glenn era is off to a rough start for the green and white.
With Sunday’s loss, the Jets find themselves at 0-3. Up next is a Monday Night Football matchup against AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins, who also find themselves at 0-3 on the year.
The Jets haven’t had a winning season since 2015. Bowles, the coach who just beat them, was running the operation for the green and white at the time. They haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2010 season, the year 2011.
A 0-3 start to the year doesn’t suggest things are about to be different in 2025.
This was the Jets‘ fifth loss since the start of last season when leading in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter — the most in the NFL and two more than any other team. For the second time in three games, they lost on a field goal in the final two minutes,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed.
A Magical Fourth Quarter Wasn’t Enough to Save the Jets
Gang Green appeared lifeless for 75% of their Week 3 game against the Bucs. They trailed 23-6 entering the fourth quarter. However, something clicked, and the Jets went on a run to make this a game.
They outscored the Buccaneers 21-6 in the game’s final quarter, which made things a lot more interesting at the end of the contest, but alas, a familiar result.
Tyrod Taylor stepped in for Justin Fields at the quarterback position. He finished the game 26-of-36 for 197 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air. However, his two turnovers, a pick-six and a fumble, proved costly.
