There won’t be any quarterback drama for the New York Jets this week.
Head coach Aaron Glenn announced during his media availability on Monday, December 22, that rookie quarterback Brady Cook will remain the starting quarterback.
“Brady will be our starting quarterback,” Coach Glenn responded when asked if he will stick with Cook.
Up next for the Jets is the final home game of the season against the New England Patriots.
Coach Glenn Explains His Quarterback Decision
“Listen, there were some things in that game. I think if you go back and watch the beginning of the game, I thought he was doing a really, really good job. But as the game progressed, I will say this: between Brady making some mistakes, between the protection of the O-Line, between some of the concepts we had for him — all of our hands are involved in the mistakes that happened during that game. I thought he did a really good job at the beginning of that game, managing the game the right way,” Coach Glenn explained.
Cook Is Set to Make His 3rd Career Start
The undrafted free agent will be making his third straight career start for the Jets. It has been a mixed bag for Cook in the lineup.
The former Missouri product has appeared in three games and has made two starts. He has completed 59.2% of his passes, has thrown for 527 passing yards, and he has a one touchdown to six interception ratio.
Across his three appearances, he has been sacked 17 times. He has also fumbled three times.
Coach Glenn Continues to Defend Cook
ESPN’s Rich Cimini argued that the Jets should consider benching Cook “for his own good” after the game. Others on social media shared a similar sentiment.
Coach Glenn admitted that the New Orleans Saints turned up the heat against Cook during the game. New Orleans finished the game with eight sacks.
“Man, all of our hands are bloody in that instance. Man, Brady for one, you gotta get the ball out of your hands in some of those. We have to understand where the pressure is coming from. Two, the O-Line has to do a better job in protection. That’s just what it is when you watch the tape. Thirdly, we have to do a better job with the concepts that we have to make sure that he is allowed to get the ball out of his hands. So again, that is a collective effort in making sure that we correct that problem. It’s not just a Brady effort, it’s not just an O-Line effort, and it’s not just a coaching effort, man, everybody is involved in that,” Coach Glenn said.
Evaluation Mode Continues for the Jets
Like anything in life, it’s never one thing.
Has Cook performed poorly? No doubt. Is it all his fault? Nope.
He is an undrafted free agent being thrust into an NFL starting role as a rookie. What you hope is that Cook will get his sea legs under him over these final two games and show you a glimpse.
Thoughts of him being a franchise quarterback are over the top, but being a backup quarterback or QB3 could be on the table.
