Rookie quarterback Brady Cook made his NFL debut for the New York Jets in Week 14.
Safe to say his teammates came away very impressed.
Wide receiver and return specialist Isaiah Williams shared some head-turning comments after the team’s 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
“I feel like he did good. I feel like Brady Cook is special. Like I told him after the game, because me [and] Mitch [Adonai Mitchell] we was just talking about it, and we were like bro, he got it — he is special. We all have games where it’s going to make or break us, and how he came back every time to the huddle, and like everybody was just bought in what he was doing, like he’s special, he’s got it. Like when people talk about that it factor, he one of them guys that got it,” Williams explained.
“It’s just development. It’s just giving him time, he was thrown in there like in the fire, and you gotta think like during the week you don’t get to take many live reps with the ones, so you got different receivers that you throwing to, and all that stuff plays a factor. I think mentally he showed me that he got it,” Williams added.
Other Teammates Chime in on Cook’s Performance
Tyrod Taylor got his third straight start since taking over for Justin Fields. Taylor hurt his groin on the second drive of the game and never returned. The Jets ruled Fields out on Friday, December 5, due to knee soreness.
That meant that Cook, who was signed to the 53-man roster on Saturday, December 6, was set to make his rookie regular-season debut.
“Yeah, look, I think Brady is a good player who has a future in this league. He just has some learning to do. [Cook was] poised; he was calm in there, I thought he did a nice job calling everything and operating within the offense. I really think Brady has a future in this league,” Jets starting center Josh Myers said after the game.
“Supreme confidence. He takes every rep in practice like a pro, and once I heard how he came in and commanded the huddle, I was like, he ain’t nervous, he is gonna be alright. We could have been better for him, so I wouldn’t put that one on him. He probably thinks he could have been better; he is gonna beat himself up, but as an offense, I think we could have easily been making a few more plays for him and Tyrod as well,” Jets running back Breece Hall said post-game.
Looking at Cook’s Debut vs. The Dolphins
Cook, 24, completed 14-of-30 passes for 163 passing yards. He threw two interceptions, fumbled once, and was sacked six times.
Cook’s teammates didn’t do him many favors in this one. The group of Jets pass catchers was targeted 32 times through the air and only came down with 15 receptions.
Seemingly, the entire Jets offense had the case of the cough drops from Mitchell, to Mason Taylor, to John Metchie III, and even Stone Smartt.
Head coach Aaron Glenn didn’t have an update to share on Taylor or Fields’ injury status for next week. The good news is that if Cook gets another crack next week, he should get the benefit of a full week of first-team reps in practice, which should provide some much-needed work with his pass catchers to get on the same page.
