The New York Jets can keep one of their own.
Insider Greg Auman of NFL on FOX predicted that running back Breece Hall will re-sign with the Jets this offseason.
“Hall, still just 24, has been a solid back on bad Jets teams, rushing for a career-best 1,065 yards in 2025. New York has ample cap space and traded away some of their best players last year in Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams — will it be willing to overpay to keep him around? Hall has only 18 rushing touchdowns in four NFL seasons, but as the featured back on a more talented offense, he could get that in two years easily. He’ll challenge [Kenneth] Walker for the high-dollar back in this free-agent class, north of $10 million a year,” Auman wrote.
The folks over at The Athletic believe Hall will get significantly more than that on his next contract.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic projected that Hall would sign a four-year, $54 million deal in free agency. That $13.5 million annual salary would place Hall No. 5 among the highest-paid running backs in the NFL, per Over The Cap.
That new deal would certainly check off a box for Hall.
“Presumably, Hall wants a deal that would put him among the top five in salary at his position, which means surpassing Alvin Kamara’s $12.25 million per year,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote.
Jets Play Tag and Then What?
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic revealed that it is “likely” that the Jets place the franchise tag on Hall.
Cimini wrote that the Jets “would like to prevent” Hall from getting to the open market.
At that point, the Jets would be bidding against the other 31 teams in the NFL. If the Jets place the tag on Hall, they will retain his rights for the time being.
They would then have until July 15 to potentially work out a long-term deal. Oftentimes, a franchise tag is used as a placeholder to buy more time so the two sides can work out an extension.
NFC Team Lurks in the Hall Sweepstakes
Cimini warned that the Arizona Cardinals, with new head coach Mike LaFleur, “could be a potential suitor.”
If the Jets place the non-exclusive franchise tag or the transition tag on Hall, he would be allowed to explore the market in free agency.
If a team signed Hall to an offer sheet with him having the non-exclusive franchise tag, the Jets would have the right of first refusal. They could match any contract offer. However, if they didn’t match an offer sheet, the Jets would be set to receive two first-round picks as compensation from that team.
The transition tag works similarly. Hall would be allowed to explore the market. If a team signed Hall to an offer sheet, the Jets would have the right of first refusal. However, if the Jets failed to match it, they would receive no compensation for losing Hall.
The good news is the transition tag ($11.7 million) is cheaper than the franchise tag ($14.5 million), but it comes with a lot more risk.
