Going back home.
The New York Jets struck a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to return Derrick Nnadi to sender.
ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler shared the news on social media and revealed that the deal was built around a “2027 conditional 6th/7th [round] pick flop.”
Nnadi Goes Back to Where It All Started
This offseason, the Jets inked the three-time Super Bowl champ to a one-year deal for $1.19 million.
Nnadi started his career as the No. 75 overall pick in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft. The first seven seasons of his career were spent with the Chiefs before joining the Jets this offseason.
Nnadi has totaled 233 tackles, seven tackles for loss, five sacks, and eight quarterback hits. During his career, he has appeared in 115 games and made 87 starts.
Nnadi appeared in on average 43% of the defensive snaps for the first six years of his career. However, last season, Nnadi’s participation precipitously dropped off to a career low of 20% of the defensive snaps.
Top Social Media Reactions to Jets-Chiefs Trade
Derrick Nnadi has always appreciated his time in KC. The Chiefs desperately needed a veteran interior lineman for early downs. Consider this essentially Skyy Moore for Nnadi,” ESPN’s Nate Taylor explained.
“Nnadi did not have a particularly good summer,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic said on social media as he reacted to the trade news.
“This is not a big surprise since Nnadi was likely to be cut after a subpar training camp,” Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News said on X previously Twitter.
A Warning to Keep Your Head on a Swivel Jets Players
The reality today might not be the reality tomorrow.
Last week, Nnadi had a really good shot of making the Jets roster. Then, suddenly, out of nowhere, general manager Darren Mougey made two trades.
The first one acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns. A few hours later, Mougey struck another trade, this time for Minnesota Vikings big man Harrison Phillips.
Those were two players not on the roster last week, who suddenly entered the fray, and both are naturally expected to make the roster.
In other words, two roster spots evaporated in the blink of an eye for the other defensive tackles on the Jets roster.
Nnadi is one of those casualties, but he is unlikely to be the only ripple effect from those trades.
