The New York Jets fired seven assistants on their coaching staff on Friday, January 23.
NFL Insider Aaron Wilson revealed on “The Jake Asman Show” that this wasn’t the media finding out late; in fact, these individuals had just been fired.
“They just got fired, actually. It has been on the table for a while that these guys knew they were unlikely to return, but they had yet to be informed officially,” Wilson explained to Jake Asman on Saturday, January 24.
The Jets were heavily criticized on social media for the timing of these firings.
Jets media member Dan Leberfeld asked, “Why did it take so long to make these decisions? Why couldn’t you just do it after the season? Why make these coaches twist in the wind?”
Jets Firings Stoke Flames of a Poor Reputation Nationally
Shortly after the Jets’ multiple firings became public on Friday night, NFL Insider Aaron Wilson revealed he received several texts from industry sources.
“That was the overwhelming conclusion: that this is a job to avoid if you have any better options, unless you’re desperate for a job. One coach that was part of Mike Tomlin’s staff contacted me, not knowing what the future holds for him in Pittsburgh, and asking about Aaron Glenn and what is the [Jets] situation is, and wanting essentially to just get a gig. Obviously, people don’t want to be out of work … I don’t know if he understood exactly what he was getting into with the roster; it just wasn’t there,” Wilson told Asman.
“Yes, at least three sources thought well, if you are gonna do all this [firing seven assistants], why didn’t you just fire Glenn and start fresh with a new guy? No, I don’t think they [the Jets] are changing course. The fact that he even got to make these firings shows that he is staying on the job. Is he going to be on some sort of hot seat where there is maybe someone on his staff who is going to become interim if they continue to have this losing slide? I really feel like they are doomed when it comes to Glenn, and you have to start thinking about 2027,” Wilson told Asman.
In other words, this isn’t a desirable job from the outside. So, Aaron Glenn has his work cut out for him to lure quality candidates in here to fill all of these vacancies on the staff.
Glenn Is Getting a Chance to Dig Himself out of This Hole
Regardless of what anyone in the peanut gallery thinks, the Jets are still behind Glenn.
He is getting a chance to course correct. Coach Glenn is firing a ton of coaching staff members whom he had hired a year ago.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini described the results of these firings as a mixed bag for the Jets.
If he stood pat and didn’t make any changes, “he’d be getting killed by fans for doing nothing.” Now he is getting killed for the timeline in which he is making said changes.
“So, yes, seven is a lot (eight if you count Wilks), but this wasn’t unexpected. Now the hard part is making the right hires the second time around, because there probably won’t be a third time if things don’t improve,” Cimini warned.
