Jets Surprisingly Cut Ties With Former First Rounder Ahead of Deadline

The New York Jets have made their first real surprise cut ahead of the season.

Gang Green announced on social media that they have parted ways with linebacker Jamin Davis ahead of the deadline on Tuesday, August 26, at 4 pm.

In total, the Jets have moved on from seven total players on Sunday, August 24.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reacted to the news on X previously Twitter saying, “Davis is a little surprising.”

Davis Seemed to Have the Inside Track to Making the Roster

The former Kentucky product entered the league as the No. 19 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Davis, 26, spent the first three and a half seasons of his career with the Washington Commanders.

He bounced around the NFC North with stops in Green Bay and Minnesota at the end of the 2024 season. On December 31, 2024, the Jets claimed Davis off waivers, and he had spent the last eight months with the team.

During his career, Davis has appeared in 54 games and has started 36 games. With those opportunities, he has collected eight sacks, 287 total tackles, 11 quarterback hits, six pass deflections, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 22 tackles for loss.

In Rosenblatt’s 53-man roster prediction on Saturday, August 23, he had Davis making the cut.

“The first three are safe, and Davis flashed in the preseason and will probably stick,” Rosenblatt said.

Top Social Media Reactions to Jets Cutting Davis

Jamin Davis is a surprise here. Most assumed he was the favorite to be LB3. Have to imagine [Marcelino McCrary-Ball] will be that guy now. He notably didn’t play in the Jets final preseason game. Adrian Martinez [was] also included among this round of cuts,” The Jet Press posted on social media.

Potentially good news for Brady Cook and Marcelino McCrary-Ball,” beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor.

A Chance for Roster Gymnastics: It’s Not a Goodbye, It’s a See You Later?

A lot of players are going to get cut this week.

Some will be gone from their teams forever, but others will have a chance to return. Davis is considered a “vested veteran.” That means he is a player with four or more accrued NFL seasons. He isn’t subject to waivers.

With him being released, Davis can immediately join another NFL team. The Jets could cut him, make other moves, and then bring him back at a later date.

Players who aren’t vested veterans are subject to waivers, and one of the other 31 NFL teams can claim them.
