The New York Jets sit at 3-11 after a terrible 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars this past Sunday.  With not much to play for besides pride these last three games, it is time to start talking about what the Jets will decide to do in the offseason, what pieces will stay, and what pieces will go.

Jets starting left guard John Simpson, who will be a free agent in the offseason made it clear after yesterday’s loss that he would be open to returning to the green and white next season when he spoke with Newsday’s Al Iannazzone.

“I want to be a part of something here and help build the culture that (coach Aaron Glenn) is trying to establish,” said Simpson following Sunday’s loss in Jacksonville, according to Iannazzone. “These guys are pretty much my brothers. I want to be in a situation where I can call somewhere home. It’s kind of what I want, what I’m looking for next.”

A Major Case to Keep Simpson

Besides Simpson at left guard, the offensive line consists of left tackle Olu Fashanu, right guard Joe Tippmann, right tackle Armand Membou, and center Josh Myers, who Adam Schefter of ESPN reported signed a two-year, $11 million extension with New York on Friday, making Simpson the only current starter not under contract for next season.

The Jets’ current starting core on the offensive line has not been perfect, but it has shown some strong performances, and there is something to be said for keeping the same starting five up front together for a second straight year, potentially bolstering chemistry at the position and ultimately improving the offense.

The offensive line has been particularly effective in run blocking this season, with the Jets’ run game tied with the Indianapolis Colts for sixth in the NFL at 128.5 yards per game, according to ESPN.

The Jets have moved on from several large contracts after trading players such as Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, giving them more financial flexibility to spend in free agency if they choose. Whether they view Simpson as a starter or a depth piece for next season, it is worth considering bringing back a veteran player who wants to be part of building Aaron Glenn’s culture in New York.

It is also worth noting that Jets right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, who suffered a season-ending torn tricep injury in practice before Week 1 of the regular season, will be a free agent this offseason. Vera-Tucker has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career but could also be an option for the team to re-sign when the offseason arrives.

Offensive Line Has a Bright Future

Whether the Jets decide to bring back Simpson or not, there is little doubt the team has successfully brought in two young offensive tackles with the potential to be franchise players for years to come.

Both left tackle Olu Fashanu and right tackle Armand Membou have shown strong promise as long-term answers at their respective positions, which is a significant development for New York.

Fashanu is in his second season at just 23 years old, while Membou is a rookie and only 22.

Whatever the Jets ultimately decide to do along the offensive line, they appear well positioned at the tackle spots for the foreseeable future.
