Well, that wasn’t as good as last week.
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was pulled from the New York Giants’ preseason game after two drives on Saturday, August 16.
Beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor described his two drives as “a disaster.
Fields finished the day 1-for-5 for four passing yards. He also contributed a rushing attempt for five yards.
Social Media Overreacts to Fields’ Poor Showing Versus the Giants
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reacted to the performance on social media by saying, ” Let’s be positive, and say the Jets passing attack is a work in progress.
That Justin Fields drive was not as good as the one last week,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic bluntly said.
Last week against the Green Bay Packers, Fields showed plenty of promise.
He finished with a 75% completion percentage (3-of-4), 42 passing yards, and he contributed two carries for 14 yards. Fields led the Jets offense on a 10-play 79-yard drive capped off by his 13-yard rushing touchdown.
It couldn’t have gone much better. Fields was on top of the world, receiving praise. Fast forward a week, and it couldn’t have gone much worse. Fields is now catching the heat of social media after a lackluster performance.
Just a brief glimpse at the roller coaster ride of playing quarterback in New York.
There Are Some Positives to Pull From This Fields Appearance
It wasn’t all bad for Fields, despite what the stats say.
The first drive was seven plays, but it resulted in a punt. However, the second drive went 12 plays for 52 yards. It resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Nick Folk to put the Jets on the board.
“Wouldn’t have minded 1 more drive from the starters but I get it. Scoring drives in both games, get everyone out healthy. Running game looks great, passing game needs work (obviously),” NFL analyst Will Parkinson posted on X previously Twitter.
Jets Have an Identity on the Offensive Side of the Ball
The Jets finished 32nd in rush attempts last season. I think it’s fair to say they’ll be a lot higher this year,” Cimini speculated.
Across those first two drives for the starting offense against the Giants, the Jets passed the ball five times and ran it 13 times.
Potential Concerning Nugget for the Jets…
In two games, Justin Fields has targeted Garrett Wilson 4 times — 0 completions. The old college teammates still working on their chemistry,” Cimini said.
Something to worry about?
Way too early for that. This is an extremely limited sample size of preseason games that include vanilla game plans.
However, if the Jets are going to have any success this year, it will require Wilson and Fields refinding that chemistry from the Ohio State days.
