The critics of New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields were awfully quiet after his performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1.
Head coach Aaron Glenn had a message to share with them on Monday, September 8.
“I think each one of you guys [the media] were dogging him all during preseason about what he can’t do & I think he just showed what he can do,” Glenn explained during his media availability. “We are all gonna say this that there are some things that he could have done better, and obviously, he is going to feel the same way. But man, this is a step-by-step process, and we know that he is not done with his progression as far as getting better. So the only thing that we are looking at is man continue to be efficient, continue to be yourself, and don’t let any outside noise try to distract you from what you can be.”
This Is a Results Oriented Business, the Jets Lost
Glenn said, “The best way to describe me this morning is disappointed, but highly, highly encouraged” by what he saw on tape, ESPN’s Rich Cimini shared.
The Jets lost 34-32 to the Steelers in the season opener. However, it’s fair to wonder how many games the Jets will continue to lose if they continue to play that way.
In Week 1, only four teams scored more than 32 points. If the Jets had played any of the other 25 teams, they would have won.
I think Justin Fields can be a very serviceable starting quarterback for the Jets,” beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor told me on “Boy Green Daily.” “Can he be the kind of franchise quarterback the team needs? He is going to have to show that level of consistency moving forward, but for the first time in four years, he has shown that he can do it. That is a major, major step forward [and] a massive confidence boost for this team. Quite frankly, if he plays like that and Tanner Engstrand is calling an offense like this, and the Jets figure out their secondary, that is a playoff team. They’re significantly better than people expect them to be.”
Fields Had a Career Day vs. The Steelers in Week 1
Justin Fields had the best passing grade (90.4) of his career yesterday, according to PFF’s grading. He also had the best EPA per attempt (0.68) of his career, per TruMedia. And Fields’ adjusted completion percentage (88.9) was the third-highest of his career,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic revealed on social media.
Former Ohio State QB Reveals He Has Been Hearing the Chatter
Fields has said publicly that he doesn’t listen to the outside noise.
However, following the Week 1 contest, Fields had some telling comments at the podium that say otherwise.
“I don’t think a lot of people expected us to come out like that. Like you said no moral victories, at the end of the day, we lost, we gotta get better, and that’s what we are gonna do this week,” Fields said.
A media member followed up by asking what he meant by people weren’t expecting that from y’all.
“I am just calling it what it is. They [the Steelers] acquired all these guys during the offseason, future Hall of Famers on that side [defense] of the ball, and we put up 32 [points], and there were still plays that we left out there. Like I said, all we have to do is keep building and keep getting better, and we will be good,” Fields explained.
Fields heard the criticisms of him as a passer, and he responded on the field with his actions. It didn’t result in a win, but that level of play is a winning formula for the green and white.
