Sweeping changes have arrived for the New York Jets.
NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero broke the news on social media that the Jets have parted ways with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY posted, “Wow: The Jets have decided to fire Tanner Engstrand. This was not the original plan. Aaron Glenn was hoping to keep him on staff at a diminished role. That [is] no longer the case.”
Engstrand Era Is Quickly Over for the Jets
NFL Insider Aaron Wilson reported last week that Engstrand was set to be “reassigned” but ultimately retained by the Jets staff.
Head coach Aaron Glenn brought Engstrand with him from the Detroit Lions. He was the play-caller for the Jets’ offense during the 2025 season.
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY shared this week that Engstrand was no longer going to be calling plays for the team, but that the full expectation was that he would remain on the staff.
The Pressure Just Turned up for AG Heading Into Year No. 2
Head coach Aaron Glenn has made nine staff changes, including this latest move with Engstrand. That includes firing two of his three coordinators.
Steve Wilks was relieved of his duties with three weeks remaining in the 2025 regular season. Engstrand was let go weeks after the Jets’ season had ended.
This is a startling amount of change for Glenn, who is heading into his second season of a five-year deal.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini shared that Glenn signed a five-year, $60 million deal. That contract pays him $12 million per season, Cimini wrote.
Top Social Media Responses to This Latest Jets Firing
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter revealed that, “Jets HC Aaron Glenn and Tanner Engstrand had multiple conversations about the role moving forward. Ultimately, they made the mutual decision to move on. The Jets’ search for a new OC will start immediately.”
“Staggering: The Jets will have a new offensive play caller in 2026, which will be their 13th different play caller in the last 16 years,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic documented the alarming amount of turnover on social media.
“The Jets have not had an offensive coordinator/primary play-caller last more than two seasons since Brian Schottenheimer from 2006-11.
The list:
2025: Tanner Engstrand
2024: Nathaniel Hackett, Todd Downing
2023: hackett
2022: Mike LaFleur
2021: LaFleur
2020: Dowell Loggains
2019: Loggains
2018: Jeremy Bates
2017: John Morton
2016: Chan Gailey
2015: Gailey
2014: Marty Mornhinweg
2013: Mornhinweg
2012: Tony Sparano”
Speaking of Schottenheimer, the Jets just had a reunion with him in Week 5 of this past season. The current Dallas Cowboys head coach cracked a joke about the crazy OC turnover over the years.
“I spent 6 years as the OC in New York. I think that’s the longest tenured coordinator there since the early 1970s. It can feel like dog years at times because they have such great fans,” Schottenheimer said back in October of 2025.
That level of turnover is unlikely to help the Jets as they begin their search for Engstrand’s replacement. The team also has no clear short or long-term answers at the quarterback position, which makes this job all the less unenviable.
