The New England Patriots unveiled a 12-foot-tall statue of Tom Brady ahead of their preseason opener on Friday, August 8.
Brady gave a speech following that ceremony, and he couldn’t help but take a shot at the New York Jets.
“In the end, the statue isn’t just for Pats fans, it’ll also give all the Jets fans something to throw their beers at as they leave the stadium every year, probably in the second quarter, maybe the third,” Brady quipped.
Jets Twitter Reacts to Brady’s Joke
“It’s good to live rent-free in the GOATS head, lol,” one fan jokingly responded.
“The Jets will forever be catching strays,” a fan predicted.
“The Jets have finished ahead of the Patriots in the AFC East standings in each of the last two seasons,” someone pointed out on social media.
“Brady can’t resist a shot at the Jets,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini reacted.
Brady Dominated the Jets During His Patriots Tenure
In 2001, Brady became the starting quarterback of the Patriots. That lasted through the 2019 season. During that stretch, Brady beat the Jets a lot.
According to StatMuse, Brady had a 30-7 record against the green and white during his NFL career.
However, the tide has started to change recently.
Over the last two seasons, the Jets and Patriots have split their season series, going 2-2 against each other.
Before that, New England had won 15 in a row against the Jets.
The Key to a Jets Turnaround Is Two-Fold
Bluntly, the Jets have to fare better inside their own division.
The green and white haven’t won the division since 2002. Over the last nine years, the Jets have finished in last place six times. The other three occasions, the Jets finished in third place.
It’s no surprise that the Jets currently own the NFL’s longest active playoff drought at 14 years and running.
Jets Start Their Preseason This Weekend
The green and white boarded their plane on Friday afternoon to head to Green Bay to play the Packers in the preseason opener.
Head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that the starters will suit up in this game. What we don’t know is how long they will be out there for. Glenn said that it will depend on variables during the game.
The first-year head coach received some backlash for that decision. However, with so many new pieces on offense, defense, and special teams, it’s hard to blame Glenn for that decision.
The Jets are certainly hoping this allows the team to work out the kinks ahead of the regular season.
