The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing veteran cornerback Mike Hilton in for a workout on September 8, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

At 31, Hilton is a proven slot corner with eight years of NFL experience. The move comes after Adoree’ Jackson had a shaky CB2 debut Week 1 that included a concussion check.

While Cooper DeJean has been taking the inside duties, if DeJean has to move outside, the nickel spot would get exposed. Jakorian Bennett, acquired via trade just weeks ago, is still learning the scheme. Thus, it’s easy to see why Philadelphia is looking for immediate help.

No corner’s going to pitch a shutout every game or during the whole run of the season,” Eagles DC Vic Fangio said prior to the team’s Week 1 showdown agains the rival Cowboys. “So yeah, they’ve got a good long leash, whoever’s out there, but we may play them all anyway.”

Hilton Has Started 56 Games Over His Career

Undrafted out of Ole Miss in 2017, Hilton spent his first four seasons with Pittsburgh and later became a trusted defensive piece in Cincinnati. Over 123 games, he’s amassed 520 tackles (66 for loss), 11.5 sacks, 13 interceptions, four forced fumbles and a reputation as one of the NFL’s toughest slot defenders.

Hilton is fearless against the run, a willing blitzer and a sticky cover man on option routes. He doesn’t shy from contact, and he rarely blows assignments. Even last season in Cincinnati, Hilton logged more than 70 tackles and held up well in coverage, playing in 16 games with 10 starts. The Eagles don’t need him to be a star—they need him to be a steadying presence. He can do that.

Financially, this is no gamble. Hilton’s big payday came in 2021 when he signed a four-year, $24 million deal with the Bengals. A September pickup now would come cheap, with little guaranteed and plenty of upside. It’s the kind of low-risk, high-reward play Howie Roseman has built his reputation on. If Hilton looks sharp, he slots in immediately. If not, the Eagles can walk away without a bruise.

More on Why the Philadelphia Eagles Might Sign CB Mike Hilton

Quinyon Mitchell looks every bit the future star, but the spots around him are unsettled. Jackson is inconsistent, Bennett is unproven and DeJean is best used as a chess piece, not forced into patchwork duty. Add Hilton, and suddenly the picture clears a bit. He’s not here to take jobs, per se — he’s here to make sure the Eagles can line up on third-and-7 without crossing their fingers and hoping for the best.

Jackson’s early concussion scare also showed just how fragile the depth chart is. Hilton may not be a long-term solution, but he’s the kind of short-term answer who can help Philly’s DBs room.

In the end, this isn’t about chasing headlines. It’s about plugging a leak before it floods the basement. If Hilton looks like himself in workouts, the Eagles will can add the sort of veteran glue every secondary needs.
