The Philadelphia Eagles are saying goodbye to one of the most recognizable defenders from their recent Super Bowl era.
Veteran cornerback Darius Slay officially announced his retirement Monday, ending a 13-year NFL career. During that span, he earned six Pro Bowl selections and won a Super Bowl with Philadelphia.
Slay shared the news in an emotional message on social media. He reflected on a journey that took him from a small town in Georgia to becoming one of the NFL’s most respected defensive backs.
“Dear football, I wanna thank you for all you’ve done for me,” Slay wrote. “I’ve been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5 years old for an amazing 13 years at the highest level… It’s hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I’m ready to turn the page.”
Known throughout his career as “Big Play Slay,” the veteran corner built a reputation for game-changing moments and lockdown coverage. His retirement closes the book on a decorated run that included standout seasons with both the Detroit Lions and Eagles.
Slay Became Cornerstone of Eagles’ Defense
Slay joined the Eagles in 2020 after being traded by the Detroit Lions. He quickly became a key piece of Philadelphia’s secondary.
During his five seasons with the Eagles, Slay earned three Pro Bowl selections. He also played a major role in shaping the team’s defensive identity.
His veteran leadership and ability to shadow top receivers helped anchor one of the NFC’s best defenses.
The highlight of Slay’s Eagles tenure came during the franchise’s championship run when Philadelphia won the Super Bowl in 2024.
During that stretch, Slay frequently matched up with the league’s best wide receivers. He remained one of the NFL’s most respected coverage corners.
Even late in his career, Slay’s experience and football instincts remained valuable inside the Eagles’ locker room.
Slay Leaves Behind Decorated NFL Career
Slay originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2013 NFL Draft after starring at Mississippi State.
His breakout season came in 2017. That year he recorded eight interceptions and 26 passes defended. He earned first-team All-Pro honors while leading the league in interceptions.
Over the course of his career, Slay totaled 28 interceptions, 162 passes defended and five defensive touchdowns. Those numbers helped cement his reputation as one of the most productive cornerbacks of his era.
After his time in Philadelphia, Slay spent part of the 2025 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was later claimed by the Buffalo Bills but never reported while considering retirement.
There was speculation this offseason that Slay could return to the Eagles, but that will no longer be the case.
