NFC Playoff Team’s Offensive Coordinator Sends Clear Message to Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles, for all intents and purposes, are in the desperation phase of trying to hire a new offensive coordinator — a prime opening for an up-and-coming assistant to step in and make an impact with an already-assembled group of Pro Bowlers and NFL All-Pro talent.

It also seems like the one job in this hiring cycle no one wants to touch.

The latest to turn his back on the job is Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, who has informed the Eagles he’s staying put.

“Bears OC Declan Doyle has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator vacancy, per sources,” The Athletic’s Diana Russini wrote on X on Monday. “Doyle opts to remain in Chicago, working with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams.”

Doyle wasn’t the only potential OC candidate to tell the Eagles “Thanks but no thanks” this week.

“LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. spoke to the Philadelphia Eagles about their offensive coordinator vacancy but informed the team he has chosen to remain with Lane Kiffin and the Tigers, per sources,” Russini added.

The Eagles’ courtship of Doyle didn’t last long — they only requested to interview with him on January 22.

“Eagles have requested to interview Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle for their offensive coordinator position,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account on Thursday. “Doyle was hired last off-season as the NFL’s youngest offensive coordinator and he previously coached under Sean Payton in New Orleans and Denver.”

One Big Reason Why OCs Scared Away From Philly

If you’re wondering why the Eagles can’t seem to attract an offensive coordinator just one year after winning the Super Bowl, it’s pretty simple: Job Security.

Would you take a job where you knew there was a 50/50 chance you might be fired if your team didn’t win the Super Bowl? It could very well happen to Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni after the 2026 season.

“Everyone can see the head coach is a dead man walking, why would anyone sign up to be back on the job market a year from now?” The Ringer’s Diante Lee wrote on X.

Eagles Were Study in Dysfunction in 2025

The Eagles were the blueprint for a dysfunctional NFL franchise in 2025 but still made the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season under Sirianni — something it’s pretty clear isn’t going to be good enough to keep his job moving forward.

The weird thing for the Eagles was that their problems were almost entirely on the offensive side of the ball, as the defense was still one of the NFL’s best units under venerated defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

While the Eagles went 11-6 and won the NFC East Division again, that wasn’t much to hang their hats on — they were the only team in the division with a winning record. When their season finally came to an end with a 23-19 home loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round, it was the offense who bore the brunt of the blame.

“On Tuesday, the team decided that Kevin Patullo is out as offensive coordinator after just one season,” Heavy.com’s Sophie Weller wrote on January 13. “The Eagles will now be searching for their fifth offensive coordinator in five years.”
