The Philadelphia Eagles have only made two free agent signings over the past three days since the start of the legal tampering period, cornerback Riq Woolen and tight end Johnny Mundt.
As they look to return to their championship-level form after a very disappointing end to the 2025 season, which saw them capitulate to the San Francisco 49ers at home as touchdown-favorites, new additions could yet be on the horizon.
Talk of the Eagles moving off star defensive tackle has been squashed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, after it appeared that some NFC rivals could be in the mix to acquire the two-time Pro Bowler.
And it seems like Philadelphia could look to make some further additions over the course of the next few days, as Dianna Russini reported on Wednesday that the team are still keeping contact with the Minnesota Vikings about the possibility of trading for Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Greenard.
Eagles Looking at Adding Pro Bowl Edge Rusher
“The Eagles continue to inquire about the Vikings’ Jonathan Greenard and remain in contact with his agent about a potential extension if a deal were to be struck, sources say.” Russini posted on X. “Philly is also keeping tabs on the free agent pass rush market after missing out on Trey Hendrickson.”
Does a Trade for Greenard Make Sense for the Eagles?
Philadelphia have not really recovered on the edge since letting Josh Sweat leave for the Arizona Cardinals after their triumphant Super Bowl LIX win in February 2025.
Going into 2026 the team have just two players – total – at the 3-4 outside linebacker position under contract, former first round pick Nolan Smith, and the solid ex-third rounder Jalyx Hunt.
Both are solid, if perhaps not game-changing players. And combined the pair managed less than 10 sacks in 2025. The team also lost 3-4 defensive end Milton Williams to the New England Patriots last offseason, who had contributed 5 sacks in 2024.
So it figures that a move for a player like Greenard who has demonstrably proven himself to be a consistent double-digit sack producer and menace off the edge, would be a sensible one.
The only main roadblock for the Eagles will be the salary. Philadelphia only have $13 million in cap space remaining, and that is without counting the yet-to-be-disclosed cap breakdown of cornerback Riq Woolen’s 1 year, $15 million deal.
An extra contract that will seemingly be north of $19 million per year would be a difficult casual add to the books, and would likely require some serious contract restructuring and other potential releases. But, as is always with GM Howie Roseman – if there is a will there is a way.
