Texans' quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson has earned a second interview for the Eagles' offensive coordinator opening

The Philadelphia Eagles have some work to do this offseason after failing to repeat as Super Bowl champions in 2025. The first big order of business involves finding a new offensive coordinator after head coach Nick Sirianni revealed that Kevin Patullo would not be returning to the team in that role in 2026.

While the Eagles have interviewed several candidates for their offensive coordinator opening, the process appeared to come to a screeching halt this week. That changed on Thursday, though, as the team brought in one of their former quarterbacks, Jerrod Johnson, for a second interview as the list of candidates begins to get narrowed down.

Jerrod Johnson Earns Second Interview for Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator Gig

Philadelphia’s search for a new offensive coordinator has drawn a lot of attention from fans. With the unit struggling to replicate the success it enjoyed in 2024, and reports of tension bubbling to the surface, some folks wondered if the team was having trouble finding candidates for the position. However, those rumors were quickly shot down, as the Eagles are simply making sure that the guy they hire is the right choice.

One guy who appears to have emerged as a frontrunner for the job is Johnson, who spent time with the Eagles back in 2011. Johnson has since turned himself into an up-and-coming coach over the past few years, and he’s been working as the Houston Texans‘ quarterbacks coach since 2023, meaning he’s played a big role in the development of C.J. Stroud.

While Stroud’s development has tailed off after a stellar rookie campaign, Johnson’s work with the talented quarterback has earned him praise across the league. Philadelphia appears to be open to bringing Johnson back to town to work as Sirianni’s offensive coordinator, as it brought Johnson in for a second, in-person interview to discuss the position on Thursday.

“Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson is among the candidates who received second, in-person interviews for Eagles offensive coordinator, sources say. He was in the building today,” Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported in a post on X.

Should the Eagles Hire Jerrod Johnson?

Beyond his ties to the Eagles, Johnson also worked with Sirianni when he was the Indianapolis Colts‘ offensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020. Johnson is not the only candidate who earned a second interview for this job, but that familiarity with both Sirianni and Philadelphia could give him a leg up on the competition as he attempts to earn himself a big promotion.

While Philly struck out on its top candidate, Mike McDaniel, Johnson would still be a solid hire for the team. His familiarity with the franchise and the system makes him a fit right off the bat, and he could help Jalen Hurts bounce back from an inconsistent 2025 campaign. Johnson hasn’t won the job just yet, but it’s beginning to look like he may be the Eagles’ top pick for their vacant offensive coordinator position, meaning his status bears watching over the coming days.
