The Philadelphia Eagles have begun their search for a new offensive coordinator, and two prominent names are now emerging as serious possibilities.
According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, league sources say Kliff Kingsbury and Kevin Stefanski are expected to “get a real look” for the Eagles’ vacant OC role.
But this strong interest all depends on if Kingsbury and Stefanski get head coaching jobs elsewhere.
With the latest Mike Tomlin firing today, there are now nine head coach openings which is more than ¼ of the entire NFL.
With those nine openings on the table, the chance that both of these coaches are available would be very slim.
Still, the reporting signals that the Eagles are prioritizing proven offensive minds as they look to reset that side of the ball heading into a pivotal offseason.
Eagles Move On From Patullo
Philadelphia officially opened the position on Tuesday by parting ways with offensive coordinator Patullo, ending a brief and disappointing tenure.
The move was widely expected after a season defined by inconsistency and very predictable play-calling.
The Eagles took a noticeable step back in all offensive efficiency metrics.
They were in the bottom 15 of seven of the eight major offensive categories, including points per game and yards per game.
And all of that came in spite of their elite and very talented roster.
Why Kevin Stefanski Makes Sense
If Kevin Stefanski ultimately pivots from head-coaching interest to an offensive coordinator role, the Eagles could emerge as a very appealing landing spot.
A two-time NFL Coach of the Year with the Cleveland Browns, Stefanski has consistently maximized imperfect quarterback situations.
He led Cleveland to playoff appearances with both Baker Mayfield and Joe Flacco under center.
Notably, he did so without anything close to the level of offensive talent Philadelphia currently has.
A Philadelphia-area native, Stefanski attended Penn and previously worked as an Eagles intern, giving him deep-rooted ties to the organization.
His heavy use of play-action concepts and zone-based rushing schemes aligns closely with the Eagles’ offensive identity.
He would be a very natural schematic and cultural fit.
The only negative pertaining to Stefanski is that he should be a hot name in the NFL’s head coaching search.
Why Kliff Kingsbury Makes Sense
Kliff Kingsbury is also another solid option for Philly.
The Eagles interviewed Kingsbury during their 2022 coordinator search before ultimately hiring Kellen Moore.
And their interest in his offensive philosophy dates back even further.
In 2020, Philadelphia interviewed then-USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, a direct product of Kingsbury’s coaching tree.
This underscores the organization’s long-standing intrigue with that system.
Kingsbury brings extensive play-calling experience from his time as head coach at Texas Tech and the Arizona Cardinals.
He also made a very strong impression last season as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator, taking them to the NFC Championship game.
His unit finished top five in EPA per play during rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ breakout campaign.
Daniels’ second season was bottled down by injuries which led to Kingsbury’s departure in Washington.
Like Stefanski, Kingsbury is also drawing head-coaching interest, which could ultimately complicate the Eagles’ pursuit.
