The offensive line has regressed as it has dealt with several injuries this season, hindering Saquon Barkley’s ability to control games on the ground. This has resulted in the decline of what was a phenomenal run game a season ago, and put more pressure on Jalen Hurts to deliver in big moments. When drives bog down, or turnovers creep in, the margin for error shrinks quickly against a disciplined, playoff-tested opponent like San Francisco.
In the postseason, efficiency often matters more than explosiveness. If the Eagles’ offense continues to oscillate between sharp and stagnant, it risks wasting opportunities created elsewhere — particularly by a defense that has done its job all season.
The Hope: A Defense Built for January (and Beyond)
If there is a reason Philadelphia remains a legitimate playoff threat, it’s the defense.
The Eagles’ defensive unit has been among the league’s best, excelling at limiting scoring and forcing opponents into uncomfortable situations. That strength gives Philadelphia a pathway to victory even if the offense doesn’t fully click.
One year after Philadelphia’s top-ranked defense helped them flatten the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, Vic Fangio’s unit ranks fifth in opponent scoring (19.1 PPG) and seventh in passing defense (189.8 YPG). They held Josh Allen and the Bills to just 12 points to get out of Buffalo with a victory despite scoring just 13 points themselves.
The Eagles have shown the ability to control games defensively — getting off the field on third down, tightening coverage in the red zone, and generating timely stops. In a playoff environment, where possessions are magnified and momentum swings are costly, that kind of defensive reliability can tilt an entire game.
Against the 49ers, that strength becomes even more important. A disciplined defense can shorten the game, keep pressure off the offense, and force San Francisco to execute long, mistake-free drives. If the Eagles can win the field-position battle and create even one or two extra possessions, it may be enough.
