One of the most polarizing players in Philadelphia Eagles history is getting another chance to play in the NFL.

Former Eagles Pro Bowl, All-Pro, and Super Bowl champion quarterback Carson Wentz has landed a new contract with the Minnesota Vikings, keeping him in the mix of what should be 1 of the most interesting quarterback situations in the NFL in 2026.

“The Vikings are adding QB depth, signing Carson Wentz to a 1-year deal,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport wrote on his official X account. “Despite significant injury last year, Wentz started five games and kept the team alive. Now, back with JJ McCarthy and Kyler Murray.”

Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, is carving out a lengthy NFL career as a reliable backup after being unceremoniously dumped by the Eagles in favor of current starter and Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts.

In 2025, Wentz looked as good as he had in a long time. He also seemed like a better option than 2024 1st round pick J.J. McCarthy, who he filled in for after McCarthy was injured early in the season.

“The Vikings went 9-8 last season and probably make the playoffs if Carson Wentz doesn’t get hurt, forcing undrafted rookie Max Brosmer into action,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero wrote on his official X account. “This time, they have Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy and Wentz in one of the NFL’s most fascinating QB rooms.”

Carson Wentz Made NFL History in 2025

Wentz made NFL history when he started for the Vikings against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3 and became the first quarterback to start for 6 different teams in 6 consecutive seasons.

Wentz signed a 1-year, $1.42 million contract with the Vikings in August 2025 and started after McCarthy sprained his ankle in a Week 2 loss to the Falcons.

Wentz started 12 games for the Eagles in 2020, 17 games for the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, 7 games for the Washington Commanders in 2022, 1 game for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023 and 1 games for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024.

“If he starts for the Vikings this weekend, Carson Wentz would become the first quarterback in NFL history to start at least one game for six different teams in six consecutive seasons,” ESPN’s Bill Barnwell wrote on his official X account on September 15.

On Verge of Superstar Career With Eagles

Wentz played his first 5 seasons for the Eagles before he was benched in favor of Hurts in 2020.

It’s kind of wild to think Wentz, who was a plug-and-play starter as a rookie in Philadelphia, was one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks in just his second season in 2017. That year, he was not only named NFL All-Pro but selected to the Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl title.

The problem? Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14, backup Nick Foles took over and led the Eagles to the first Super Bowl win in franchise history — including winning Super Bowl LII MVP honors in an upset of the New England Patriots.

Wentz’s bigger problem in 2017 wasn’t his injury. It was his attitude. — and he reportedly got into a physical altercation with Eagles running back Darren Sproles after Wentz expressed his displeasure with his team’s success following his injury.

The Eagles still signed Wentz to a 4-year, $128 million contract extension before the 2019 season, only to trade him to the Colts in February 2021 in exchange for a 2021 3rd round pick and 2022 1st round pick.
