Compounding the noticeable struggles by both of the Steelers‘ young quarterbacks in Pittsburgh’s loss to the Jets, the offensive line put together film they aren’t proud of themselves.
Having allowed a sack and appearing to miss key blocks in the game, Broderick Jones became a scapegoat for Steelers fans in the aftermath of the team’s 17-0 defeat. Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio tried to defend the 25-year-old offensive tackle.
“We’re going to continue to push him and get him to settle in…you can see he’s getting more comfortable,” Angelichio told reporters on Saturday.
He also added that Jones is “still trying to find his groove” on the left and right sides.
While assessing his own play to Steelers Now, Jones was honest about what happened and knows he needs to be better.
“I think it was two (sacks he allowed). They’re watching. I ain’t gonna lie. There’s not nothing to it but to get better. That’s all I gotta do.”
But he was also honest about his perspective on how he’s being handled when it comes to switching sides. He was place on the right side against the Jets when he played more on the left side in the Steelers’ preseason opener win over the Packers.
When asked about being moved around, Jones couldn’t help but share his true feelings.
“I would rather not,” said Jones. “Me coming back from injury, I would rather not swing like that. I would rather stick to one side and just continue to focus on that one side, but wherever the team needs me — that’s right and left — I just gotta continue to get better so I can help my team.”
Jones, a two-time College Football Playoff national champion from his time at the University of Georgia, opened the 2025 season as Pittsburgh’s starting left tackle, suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 12. His injury setback came after he turned his season around, too. Having initially squandered three sacks on quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Week 1, Jones only gave up three more during a span of Week 2 to Week 10.
However, regardless what the player may prefer, Angelichio’s comments certainly come off as if the Steelers are planning to continue with their initial plan for how to work Jones back into the fold at the start of 2026. Either way, Pittsburgh, even now with a new staff in place, is still invested in trying to find a way for the franchise’s 2023 first round pick to make an impact, be successful and help the team win.
