Mike Tomlin Heaps Unusual Praise on Steelers Kicker Chris Boswell After Week 1

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin gave kicker Chris Boswell very unusual praise after the team's Week 1 win.

Kicker Chris Boswell has delivered numerous difficult field goals in pressure situations for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the years. Although the Steelers reached the end zone four times in Week 1, that happened again in the 2025 season opener.

First, Boswell made a 56-yard field goal to give the Steelers an early second-quarter lead. The All-Pro kicker then connected on a 60-yarder with about a minute left in regulation.

Those two field goals proved clutch in the 34-32 Steelers victory against the New York Jets on Sunday.

After the win, at first, it sounded as though Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who practically praised Boswell on a weekly basis last season, was at a loss for words over his kicker.

But then the Steelers head coach offered a classic Tomlinism to describe his kicker.

“I can’t say enough about Boz. Our kicker is a serial killer,” Tomlin said in his postgame press conference. “Man, he’s got a low pulse rate. He can’t wait to deliver.”

Steelers’ Chris Boswell Delivers Twice From 50-Plus in 2-Point Win

Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker overshadowed Boswell during his first decade in the league. Rightfully so, as Tucker might be the best kicker in NFL history.

But when Tucker struggled last season, Boswell became the clear best-choice for first-team All-Pro.

In 2024, Boswell made 93.2% of his field goals. It was the seventh time in his career he made at least 90% of his field goals in a single season.

Two of his three misses on field goals last season were from 50 yards or farther. But Boswell is still a great deep kicker. He connected on 13 of 15 (86.7%) from 50-plus in 2024.

Boswell began the 2025 campaign 2-for-2 from that range. He also made all four of his extra points in Week 1.

During the fourth quarter, there was little debate about allowing Boswell the opportunity at the 60-yarder since the Steelers were trailing with about one minute remaining. But even in the second quarter, there wasn’t much hesitation about Boswell kicking from deep range.

“Boz always makes it from 60 in pre-game. Boz always wants to bang from deep,” Tomlin told reporters after Sunday’s win. “That one he made in the first half, I don’t know if he even looked at me. When it went to fourth down, he walked out onto the field.

“That’s the type of guy you want banging for you under those circumstances.”
