For the second day in a row, a former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman retired. On Monday, it was interior offensive lineman John Leglue.
The 29-year-old revealed his retirement plans via a social media post on X.
“Forever grateful for the opportunity to have achieved my childhood dream of competing at the highest level. Many dream of playing in the NFL, but few truly understand the discipline, sacrifice, and commitment it takes to get there. I’m thankful for every high, low, scar, lesson, and brother this sport brought into my life,” wrote Leglue.
“Thank you to every coach, teammate, and organization that believed in a small town Louisiana kid and gave me the chance to live out this dream. To Tulane University and every NFL team I had the honor of playing for, thank you for trusting me and allowing me to wear your colors.”
Leglue didn’t specifically mention the Steelers in his message. But of the four pictures he included with his message, three of them were with Leglue wearing black and gold.
“To the game that gave me everything, thank you,” concluded Leglue. “Excited for this next chapter.”
Leglue played six games with the Steelers during the 2021 season. He started five of those contests.
The only other NFL regular season appearance he made was with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Leglue also experienced training camp or practice squad stints with the Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams.
He was last on an NFL roster in August with the Rams.
Ex-Steelers Lineman John Leglue Retires
Leglue last played in a regular season contest for the Steelers in 2021. But the guard returned to the organization two years ago.
He began the 2024 regular season on the Steelers practice squad. He joined the team’s active roster as a practice squad elevation in September, but Leglue didn’t play in that game.
Leglue was off and on the team’s practice squad throughout that campaign.
In 2025, Leglue essentially had a four-day tryout with the Rams when he signed late during the preseason. He didn’t make the team out of training camp.
Unfortunately, that’s the last time Leglue was on an NFL roster.
Leglue played college football at Tulane. The first picture he included of himself in his retirement post was himself on the field for the Green Wave.
Another Steelers Lineman Retires
Leglue was the second former Steelers offensive lineman from the 2021 roster to retire this week. Former right tackle Zach Banner also announced his retirement Sunday.
Banner used social media and his podcast for his announcement
“For those new to my podcast, thank you for joining. This type of tempo and lack of enthusiasm and pondering every single thought is not usually what I do,” Banner said at the start of his latest episode. “But this is an emotional day. I’m going to hold it together, I promise. I can’t promise that, but I’m going to try and promise.”
Leglue and Banner played in four contests together toward the end of the 2021 campaign. During that stretch, though, Banner didn’t receive much playing time on offense, so the duo didn’t get a lot of snaps together.
Still, it was a coincidence that two former journeyman linemen who played for the Steelers five years ago retired so closely together.
