Wide receiver Lance McCutcheon appeared content to retire this offseason. Instead, he’s returning to the Tennessee Titans for another season.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported McCutcheon agreed to a 1-year deal with the Titans.
“Former Steelers and Titans WR Lance McCutcheon, who had announced his retirement earlier this offseason, had second thoughts and is now signing a 1-year deal with Tennessee, sources say,” wrote Rapoport on X.
“An intriguing resolution for the 27-year-old and a new opportunity.”
McCutcheon joined the Steelers practice squad in October 2024. After a month on the squad, though, the team released McCutcheon.
The receiver re-joined the Steelers in March 2025. He opened the 2025 campaign on the team’s practice squad before signing with the Titans in September.
McCutcheon last appeared in an NFL regular season game with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. He’s also spent time with the Houston Texans and New York Jets.
In 10 games during 2022, McCutcheon received five targets but didn’t catch a pass. He played 56 offensive snaps and 110 snaps on special teams.
WR Lance McCutcheon Signs Contract With Titans: Report
Tennessee was very busy in NFL free agency Wednesday. Before lunch time in the central time zone, the Titans had already signed quarterback Hendon Hooker, wide receiver K.J. Osborn and running back Michael Carter, in addition to McCutcheon.
In McCutcheon, the Titans are landing a former undrafted free agent who has experience at both receiver and on special teams.
The receiver began his NFL career signing with the Rams in May 2022. Los Angeles waived McCutcheon less than two weeks after signing him, but he then re-joined the team two days later.
Following his second preseason with the Rams, the team waived him as part of their final August roster cuts. McCutcheon then joined the Texans practice squad.
He split his 2023 season with the Texans and Jets. After spending the 2024 preseason with New York, the Jets waived McCutcheon in late August.
The receiver joined the Steelers two months later. Although he didn’t finish the campaign in Pittsburgh, the Steelers brought him back on a reserve/futures contract. McCutcheon, though, didn’t make the Steelers at the end of last preseason. The team then cut him from its practice squad on September 8.
McCutcheon Set to Return From Brief NFL Retirement
The veteran receiver seemed ready for a new chapter in his life this spring. On March 5, McCutcheon announced on his Instagram account that he was retiring from professional football.
But clearly, he’s ending that brief retirement with his Titans contract.
In Tennessee, McCutcheon could have an opportunity to make the team’s roster as a depth receiver. If not, he could be a practice squad receiver with the Titans.
In addition to Osborn, who the Titans also signed Wednesday, Tennessee has wide receivers Calvin Ridley, Wan’Dale Robinson, Elic Ayomanor, Bryce Oliver, Mason Kinsey, Chimere Dike, Xavier Restrepo and Hal Presley III on its offseason roster.
Ridley and Robinson are projected to be the team’s starting receivers.
A Bozeman, Montana native, McCutcheon played college football at Montana State. During his final college season, the receiver had 61 catches for 1,121 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
