After the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off NFL trade deadline day by sending linebacker Melvin Ingram to the Chiefs, the team continued to roll with additional roster moves.
The only way the Steelers would’ve traded away a former Pro Bowl player like Ingram is if there was a sufficient option to replace him. Charlton, signed to the Steelers practice squad on September 21, was added to the 53-man roster on November 2. The defensive end was selected 28th-overall by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2017 NFL draft.

• Signed K Josh Lambo & DT Khalil Davis to the practice squad
• Released DL Chris Slayton from the practice squad

Charlton was activated for his first time in the Black & Gold on October 30 versus the Cleveland Browns. According to Pro Football Reference, Charlton played 10 snaps to relieve Ingram, who was dealing with an apparent groin injury.

Boswell’s Backup
Among other roster moves the Steelers made was the all-important signing of a backup kicker. Josh Lambo, most recently part of the Jacksonville Jaguars, was added to the practice squad. Lambo missed two extra points versus the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 (according to Pro Football Reference) and was released in favor of former Steeler Matthew Wright.
With Steelers starting kicker Chris Boswell in concussion protocol, the acquisition of Lambo was strictly a precautionary measure. As Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said in his November 2 press conference, “There’s nothing that alarms us in terms of the process that’s he’s in, but it is a process. If Bos is cleared and ready to go, he’ll be our kicker on Monday night.”
Boswell was concussed after a hit to the head on a fake field goal versus the Browns on October 30.
Three’s Company
Defensive tackle Khalil Davis brings an NFL world championship ring with him to Pittsburgh. Though he only suited up for two games last season, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defenseman was part of the team that defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2020 Super Bowl.
Joining T.J. Watt and Derek Watt and Terrell Edmunds and Trey Edmunds, the addition of Davis to the Steelers practice squad makes three sets of brothers on the team’s roster. Davis’ brother Carlos, a 2020 seventh-round pick, is currently on injured reserve with a knee injury.
The Steelers released defensive lineman Chris Slayton, signed off waivers from the Giants last week, to make room for Lambo.
