The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ offseason has gotten off to a chaotic start. Less than 24 hours after they were eliminated from the playoffs by the Houston Texans, longtime head coach Mike Tomlin revealed that he was resigning from his post with the team. That forced the Steelers to begin searching for a new head coach for the first time in 19 years.
While fans are curious as to who Pittsburgh will hire as its next head coach, Tomlin has immediately generated interest across the league among teams that also have vacancies at the head coach position. However, in the wake of leaving the Steelers, Tomlin has reportedly sent a clear message on what his coaching future will look like.
Mike Tomlin Not Interested in Latching on with New Team After Steelers Departure
Tomlin accomplished quite a bit during his time with the Steelers, but in recent years, the team continually failed to meet expectations. While Pittsburgh never had a losing record during Tomlin’s time in charge of the team, it hasn’t won a playoff game since 2017. After a blowout loss to the Texans, Tomlin decided that he needed a change.
Now that he has left Pittsburgh, he has a plethora of options on his plate. Tomlin could take a coaching job with another team, but that doesn’t appear likely to happen in 2026. Instead, reports have linked Tomlin to a slew of potential media jobs, as various companies are lining up for a shot to bring him in for the upcoming season.
At some point, the assumption is that Tomlin will return to the NFL and coach another team. According to Brooke Pryor and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, while a return to the league in 2026 never seemed likely, recent comments made by Tomlin may indicate that he intends to take an extended break from coaching before potentially returning in the future.
“Cutting through the raw emotion of the meeting was a line delivered by Tomlin during his formal goodbye that stuck with one coaching source: ‘I’m not interested in coaching anyone else’s team right now,’ the source recalled Tomlin saying in that 2 p.m. meeting,” Pryor and Fowler wrote. “The source took that to mean Tomlin is definitely not coaching in 2026 and might truly take an extended break but left the window open slightly for an eventual return.”

Rumors have swirled around Tomlin’s future with the Steelers for years, but nobody truly expected that his time with the team would come to an end in such sudden fashion. That has left Pittsburgh in a bit of a tough spot, although it should be OK, as reports indicate several head coach candidates view its opening as one of the most attractive jobs in the league.
A stint in media appears to be awaiting Tomlin, with the big question being how long he will stay away from coaching before eventually returning. When he does decide to return, Tomlin is going to be able to pick and choose which gigs he’s interested in, so he may wait until he sees an opportunity he likes. For now, though, he’s focused on enjoying his time away from coaching before determining what his future in the industry will look like.
