The Pittsburgh Steelers added 10 players through the 2026 NFL Draft. General manager Omar Khan and the Steelers are now busy signing undrafted free agents.
Indiana defensive back Devan Boykin became the team’s first undrafted free agent signing Saturday evening. Exclusive Sports Group announced the signing on its official X account.
Pro Football Sports Network called Boykin an “under-the-radar” prospect at defensive back. Boykin can play both slot cornerback and safety.
“Boykin’s positional versatility is a hallmark of his profile. He can play nickel or safety in split-field looks, and he’s borderline elite in run support, with a quick-firing trigger, sharp angle IQ, excellent block take-on technique, and finishing ability,” wrote the PFSN staff. “Those same intangibles help him in coverage, where he combines fluid, fleet-footed, and agile athleticism with measured spatial management and keen route vision.”
Boykin spent four seasons at NC State, where he posted 117 combined tackles in 44 games. He also had five tackles for loss, seven pass defenses and four interceptions.
During 2025, Boykin registered a career-high 59 combined tackles, including six tackles for loss at Indiana. He also had career-bests of five pass defenses and a sack with two interceptions.
Boykin was part of the Hoosiers defense that helped Indiana go undefeated and win the national championship.
Steelers Sign DB Devan Boykin as 1st 2026 Undrafted Free Agent
The Steelers came into the offseason needing to add secondary depth. Boykin, though, is now joining a Pittsburgh defensive backfield that looks pretty full.
In NFL free agency, the Steelers signed cornerback Jamel Dean and safeties Jaquan Brisker and Darnell Savage.
During the 2026 NFL Draft, the team selected cornerback Dayien Everette in the third round and safety Robert Spears-Jennings late on Day 3.
Boykin’s versatility, though, could help him earn a job with the Steelers this summer.
The slot might be the ideal location for Boykin to receive playing time. But the team does have Jalen Ramsey, Brandin Echols and Donte Kent capable of playing nickel cornerback.
Omar Khan Signing Other Undrafted Free Agents
Boykin was just the first undrafted free agent the Steelers signed in the first hours after the 2026 NFL Draft concluded.
According to multiple reporters and sports agencies, Khan and the Steelers also signed tight end Lake McRee, defensive lineman Kevin Jobity Jr., kicker Laith Marjan and tight end Chamon Metayer.
The Steelers will likely continue to add undrafted free agents late Saturday and Sunday. The team had 10 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, so there isn’t as much room for undrafted free agents in Pittsburgh as some other teams.
The undrafted free agent class this year might also not be as strong as past years. Pundits have argued that could be the case because of the recent installment of the NIL at the college level.
But the Steelers could still add more intriguing prospects to end the weekend.
Undrafted quarterbacks are always fascinating additions for teams. But given the Steelers drafted Penn State’s Drew Allar and are still pursuing Aaron Rodgers, Khan is probably not going to sign a quarterback in undrafted free agency.
