When the 2026 Puppy Bowl XXII aired on Super Bowl Sunday, millions tuned in for its usual dose of adorable antics and shelter-dog advocacy. But for fans of the canine spectacle, one four-legged competitor stood out above the rest: Teigan, the wheelchair-using, mini Aussie rescue pup from Connecticut, whose story became one of the most memorable in Puppy Bowl history.

Teigan was part of Team Fluff, one of the two squads of adoptable dogs competing for the coveted Lombarky Trophy – a playful homage to football’s iconic Vince Lombardi trophy. Over 150 dogs from 72 shelters across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the British Virgin Islands participated in 2026’s event, with 15 specially-abled pups highlighted for their resilience and personalities.

But while viewers watched her march out onto the miniature field with determination and playfulness, many didn’t know that Teigan had, in fact, passed away months before the big broadcast ever hit screens.

From Shelter to Spotlight: Teigan’s Journey

Born on April 12, 2025, Teigan had cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological condition that affected her balance and coordination, and a severely twisted spine that caused a permanent head tilt. She faced challenges from the moment she came into the care of Perfect Imperfections Rescue and Sanctuary in Watertown, CT.

Her mobility issues meant she relied on a custom-built cart from K9Karts to help her move with confidence. Despite her physical limitations, Teigan’s spirit was infectious, and that personality made her a standout during filming for Puppy Bowl XXII. Her caretakers at the rescue shared stories of her joy, her determination to play with other dogs, and the way she would light up when given space to run or explore.

Filming for the puppy spectacle occurred months before its February air date – a standard process that gives producers time to assemble commentary, music, and all the behind-the-scenes storytelling that makes Puppy Bowl a heartwarming counter-programming staple to the NFL’s big game. Teigan was featured in a segment that not only showcased her mobility cart but also celebrated her zest for life, regardless of challenges.

“This was so exciting since we had never participated before,” Trisha Malfitano, founder of Perfect Imperfections Rescue and Sanctuary, said. “Sharing my small rescue with people and the amazing dogs who pass through our doors gave me a different platform to show the world special needs dogs.”

A Bittersweet Broadcast and Tragic Loss

In October 2025, Teigan’s health took a turn for the worse. She contracted aspiration pneumonia, a dangerous lung infection that can occur when swallowing becomes difficult, a risk she faced due to her spinal condition.

“Unfortunately, her body was not able to recover. I was told she would always have this issue, and we took every precaution we could,” Malfitano said. “She was held upright for feedings, burped and then used the cart to stay off her side to make sure she had clear airways.”

But sadly, Teigan passed away at just seven months old.

When Perfect Imperfections Rescue shared the news of her passing, the reaction was immediate and emotional. Fans who had grown attached to her joyful presence poured tribute after tribute into social media.

“Teigan was such an incredible soul,” Malfitano wrote on the rescue’s social media page. “I’m not sure I will ever get over losing her so soon.”

How Fans Can Honor Teigan and Support the Rescue

For those moved by Teigan’s story, there are meaningful ways to get involved and help ensure her impact continues. Perfect Imperfections Rescue and Sanctuary relies on donations, volunteers, and community support to provide medical care, mobility equipment, and safe havens for animals with special needs. Supporters can contribute directly through the rescue’s official channels, helping other dogs like Teigan receive the same love, attention, and chance to thrive that she did during her short but powerful life.

Fans can also keep Teigan’s spirit alive in a more personal way. After an outpouring of requests from viewers, the rescue released a Teigan sweatshirt, allowing supporters to honor her legacy while directly benefiting the animals still in care. The rescue shared the message simply: “So many people asked for Teigan to be on a sweatshirt! Link is in the bio #teigan.”

Proceeds from the merchandise go back into the rescue’s mission, funding lifesaving care and advocacy for dogs often overlooked due to medical challenges. The sweatshirt, and other rescue merchandise, is available at microprintshop.com.

Legacy Beyond the Field

Teigan’s legacy extends far beyond the scaled-down stadium and playful commentary. Her story has become a powerful reminder of the value of adoption, especially for dogs with special needs, who are often overlooked in shelters. In the space of a few heartwarming minutes on the Puppy Bowl broadcast, she encouraged potential adopters to see past physical limitations and recognize the joy and love that a dog like her could bring into a home.

“We ended [each] day with cuddles before bedtime. I miss her every day,” Malfitano said. “She took a piece of my heart when she left this world.”

Other rescue workers, Puppy Bowl staff, and even casual viewers noted how Teigan’s resilience and character gave a deeper emotional weight to an event that already champions second chances for shelter animals. Her presence helped elevate conversations about accessibility, inclusivity, and care for animals with special needs.

“Teigan will forever be in our hearts,” Pedigree Dog Food commented on a social media post. “She was and will always be SUCH an inspiration. Her legacy lives on.”
