After months of speculation, it appears that if the San Francisco 49ers were able to secure their star wide receiver.

According to multiple media outlets, the 49ers are giving Deebo Samuel a three-year, $71.55 million extension, NFL insiders, including Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter, tweeted out on Sunday, July 31.

“The 49ers and star weapon Deebo Samuel are in agreement on a massive contract extension, keeping him in SF for the foreseeable future,” Rapoport tweeted. “The drama is over, the bridge is rebuilt.”

“49ers are giving Deebo Samuel a three-year, $71.55 million extension, including $58.1 million guaranteed, per sources,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted out.

Schefter also tweed that the new deal has “a max value of up to $73.5 million.”

ESPN also noted that this means that the All-Pro receiver can take the field at 49ers training camp starting Monday.

A Long Wait

The upcoming season is the final year of Samuel’s rookie contract, but the sports world was startled when the receiver announced that he wanted to be traded from the Bay in April, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

“He did not want to discuss specific reasons behind his request, but he has indeed let the 49ers know his desire to leave the organization,” Darlington tweeted on April 20.

The South Carolina product had been “unwilling to engage” with long-term offers from the 49ers franchise, Rapoport said in April.

49ers general manager John Lynch said during training camp on Tuesday, July 26, that he was optimistic about the two sides finally getting off the “will they or won’t they” roller coaster.

“We’ve had really productive and substantive talks,” Lynch said. “I don’t want to get everyone all excited that something is imminent because we’re not there yet, but really hopeful that in the near future we’ll be able to announce something that is exciting for everyone involved. Deebo is here today and we’re excited about moving forward with him as part of this team.”

Samuel caught for 77 passes for 1,405 receiving yards during the 2021 season while leading the league with 18.2 yards per catch.

According to ESPN, the star “wideout” is the seventh to ink a deal of at least $24 million per year during the NFL offseason.

An “Unstoppable” Group?

As expected, social media went nuts on Sunday evening after the news broke that 49ers finally got their man.

Fans and media alike were quick to share footage of the WR in action.

“Me thinking about how unstoppable Trey Lance, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Anyuk and George Kittle will be this season,” another person tweeted.

“49ers WR Deebo Samuel becomes the 11th receiver to do a deal this offseason with an APY of $20 million or more,” one sports analyst said. “Prior to March, there’d been just four such deals for wideouts in league history.”

“Credit to Deebo for not caring about the APY vanity contest,” the Athletic said. “Focused on the GTD money.”

“Deebo Samuel deserves every cent of that contract just on how sick the 49ers’ tunnel entrances were in the playoffs,” someone else said.

San Francisco selected Samuel with the second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
