he San Francisco 49ers 2025 season ended in the worst way possible. Despite upsetting the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in the Wild Card round, the 49ers lost star tight end George Kittle to a torn Achilles. Without Kittle, the 49ers saw their season end in the divisional playoffs with a 41-6 beatdown at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks. Now, the 49ers turn their attention to 2026– with Kittle’s return, and overall future in football, a big question.

Luckily, Kittle gave fans reason for optimism on Monday, Jan. 19 when he spoke to the media during 49ers’ locker room clean-out day. Normally a nine-12 month recovery, Kittle has his sights set on a much sooner timeframe– eager to return to the field as soon as possible.

Kittle Hints at Return Timeline

A torn Achilles tendon is never good, but in Kittle’s case, he got somewhat of a best case scenario. While he opted to keep his exact return timeline under wraps, Kittle hinted that because he suffered a clean tear, he could be on track to return well before a mid-November timetable. Kittle already underwent surgery on his Achilles in Los Angeles.

“Surgery went really, really good,” Kittle said. “[Dr. Neal ElAttrache] said best-case scenario when you tear an Achilles is that you tear it up high by your soleus, which is what I did. I had a clean tear. They didn’t have to drill into my heel. And where the repair was there’s more blood flow. And so it takes some time off of the recovery time… It’s not as bad as other ones.”

When the injury happened, Kittle knew immediately what happened– to the point that when an Eagles’ staff member when over to check on him and asked him what he needed, his first response was to ask for a cart.

“I knew exactly when it happened, it felt like someone put a shotgun up against my calf and pulled the trigger,” Kittle said. “The second it happened, I knew exactly what it was… Unfortunate, but football’s tough sometimes.”

Kittle’s absence was not the only reason why the 49ers lost to the Seahawks, but it certainly did not help. Along with Kittle, the 49ers will anticipate the returns of Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Mykel Williams and others in the hopes that their return to action can propel the 49ers back into Super Bowl contention.

Kittle’s 2025 Season

Kittle’s Achilles injury was just one of multiple bumps in the road for the future Hall of Famer this season. Limited to only 11 games this season, Kittle injured his hamstring in week one and missed the next five games. Then, Kittle injured his ankle in week 16– forcing him to miss the 49ers’ week 17 contest before injuring his Achilles in the wild card playoff game.

However, despite all the injuries, Kittle still had himself a strong season and earned his seventh Pro Bowl selection– finishing with 57 catches for 628 yards and seven touchdowns. Not having Kittle to start the 2026 season will be tough for the 49ers– who will need to figure out a solution in the interim.
