Former San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl defensive back Donte Whitner was fired by NBC Sports Bay Area reportedly over budgetary concerns.
This news comes as a disappointment to 49ers fans, many of whom loved to see Whitner on TV.
In an article published by SFGate on Friday July 25, 2025, Whitner said that the news came as a total shock.
“I got a lot of really good feedback from the San Francisco fans when I was out in the community about how much they liked the commentary and the clothes and the bluntness and telling it how it is,” Whitner said. “So eight years later, after our ratings are, I believe, the highest in the network’s history. I don’t know how it ended the way it did.”
Whitner had been part of the network for seven seasons. He is effectively being replaced by 49ers insider Matt Maiocco, who NBC Sports Bay Area announced is joining 49ers Pre and Postgame live this season. Those corresponding moves give the 49ers no former players on their pre or postgame show.
“They told me they didn’t have any money, that I was the highest paid at the network and that they were switching over and it was budget cuts,” Whitner told SFGATE. “It was unfortunate. I put a lot of hard work, sweat and tears into being the best that I could for a long period of time. But I guess that happens.”
Looking Back on Whitner’s Time With the 49ers
Donte Whitner was only on the 49ers for three short seasons, but he left the kind of impact that reverberated far beyond his few years in San Francisco.
Metaphorically, but also literally. Whitner was known for making vicious hits on his tackle attempts that often forced fumbles or took out opponents.
The 49ers made the NFC Championship game or better every year that Whitner was in San Francisco.
In 2012, he racked up 82 tackles and an interception to earn a trip to the Pro Bowl. His efforts also helped the 49ers make the Super Bowl that season, which they ultimately lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
On TV, he became a fan favorite for hard hitting analysis. He was not afraid to call out the 49ers for troubling trends and always called it like it was.
49ers fans will certainly miss his presence on 49ers pregame and postgame live.
What Is Whitner Doing Next?
Fortunately for fans of Whitner, he is not leaving the 49ers media ecosystem entirely.
Unfortunately, he isn’t sure if he’s going to be returning to flagship 49ers radio station KNBR either. The team set up his appearances on that station to cross promote 49ers pre- and postgame live on NBCBA.
But Whitner did say that he is launching a podcast with ex-49ers teammate, Niners legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Patrick Willis, as well as longtime Bay Area media personality Rod Brooks, in the coming weeks.
Willis’s insight, as someone who is still around the team often, will be fascinating and highly entertaining alongside Whitner’s analysis.
What do you think, 49ers fans? Are you sad about Donte Whitner’s firing? Will you be listening to his new podcast?
